good, it has 85 yrs left to run on the lease to be operated as an airport, so hopefully, the new owners might be a bit more pro active rather than trying to screw every cent from the operators there.. the rents on hangarage and aircraft parking are charged at the same rate as commercial property.... it explains why YSBK at least is a ghost town.

when i tried to get a permanent parking spot at YSBK, it took me over 15 phone calls, and no one could tell me anything, other than "just park it, and we will charge the daily parking rate of $35"

not to mention the $10 per movement charge..

The problem is that when the government passed the airports on to the local councils, it should have been with something like a minimum time frame for operation as an airport only. Are we in Sydney going to lose Bankstown and Camden airports altogether? Of course it is not making money, they are charging too much for the little folks who would happily pay a fair amount to keep their private aircraft there. I think they will probably stay as airports however possibly sell off more land around them for commercial use.

See the article in today's Torch.

No. We won't lose Bankstown and Camden. The Federal Airports Commission only sold the leasehold. In reality, the Commonwealth still retains ownership of the land, so unless some dumb politician gets the idea to kill aviation, they will remain airports until the next century.

This sale could be a positive result for those engaged in aviation. If the leaseholds get sold, those who had leases with BACH will have to renegotiate leases with the new leaseholders. This time they won't be conned into signing leases that disadvantage them in relation to lease transfer and sale of physical assets.

Getting rid of BACH might be a shot in the arm for aviation in teh Sydney Basin.

Well, anything is possible so don't take for granted that either (or both) airports will not be sold. I am still lamenting the loss of Schofields aerodrome which was only 2 km from my home. I think they are going to build a very large "Westfield"-style shopping centre there starting later this year ...so I have been told by locals. So, perhaps, Camden will end up with a Westfields.
