gareth lacey Posted April 7, 2012 Author Posted April 7, 2012 HI Kevin some of the pics of the frame cheers h Gareth
kgwilson Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 I see you have bolted the longerons together at the tail and there does not seem to be much rake for the fin post. Is this temporary? Getting the fin post absolutely vertical is critical. I used a plumb bob & 1 metre level across the fuselage at the steel subframe & blocked the fin post with some full 20 litre drums so there would be no movement when rivetting the post to the rear frame. It was easier to do this before the firewall was installed as I didn't have a bench short enough to have the firewall top & fin post hanging over each end.
gareth lacey Posted April 8, 2012 Author Posted April 8, 2012 Hi Kevin have set at 5degrees as per drawings but will fix plumb and exact 5 degrees know that it is turned over ,we will be temp fixing airframe to table for stability of any fixing off that we do ,+ we will be using laser levelling and plumb ,thanks for the input cheers Gareth
kgwilson Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 Mine is set at 7 deg which is why it didn't look like much rake in the photo I guess. Most of the later Sierras are at 7 deg. Doesn't make any difference just aesthetics with more slope on the vertical stabiliser/rudder.
gareth lacey Posted April 8, 2012 Author Posted April 8, 2012 Just going off the drawing it says 5 degrees but will set at 7 and see what it looks like cheers gareth
kgwilson Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 Garry changed it for a more streamlined look but the original plans still say 5 deg. You may want to check with Garry as you have a wider cockpit than standard but I think it looks better with a 7 deg rake.
Guernsey Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 Garry changed it for a more streamlined look but the original plans still say 5 deg. You may want to check with Garry as you have a wider cockpit than standard but I think it looks better with a 7 deg rake. I agree. Alan.
gareth lacey Posted April 13, 2012 Author Posted April 13, 2012 Hi All you Morgan fanatics here are more pics of our build
gareth lacey Posted April 24, 2012 Author Posted April 24, 2012 Front skin over new alum tank and fire wall between tank and cockpit
bacon Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Front skin over new alum tank and fire wall between tank and cockpit Hi Gareth Have you guys built your own alum fuel tank to replace the normal fiberglass one? Have you got any more photos of it Cheers Jamie 1
gareth lacey Posted April 24, 2012 Author Posted April 24, 2012 Hi Jamie yes we built a 95 litre full alum tank temp installed untill we get the fuel sender and flow valves then we will install and final skin off ,the tank will be coming out tomorrow so that we can seal off the area that tanks it sits in as a fire guard ,we will be making a mock up dash tomorrow (our cockpit is 180mm wider than normal so the dash supplied is to small) then we will make a plug for the fibre glassing also set the brakes and rudder pedals in place ,we are also getting the rudder control cables made up to fit ,we have the elavator glass spars ready for fitting and alignment will take a few more pics tomorrow cheers gareth
kgwilson Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 Your fuel tank seems an interesting design. Looks like it slopes down to the floor so if that is the case the fuel gauge will be a fair bit out of whack. Is there any sort of sump/collector and internal baffles? How do you intend to seal the riveted joints?
gareth lacey Posted April 29, 2012 Author Posted April 29, 2012 Hi Kevin the fuel tank is the same shape as the fibre glass one, what you see is aluminium bulkhead around tank area, cut folded and riveted in pos then sealed up in ternally ,this (in theory) should if tank is punctured in the event of damage ,will not allow fuel into cockpit,(fire in cockpit alarms me) fuel sender will be into sump as per normal cheers Gareth
gareth lacey Posted April 30, 2012 Author Posted April 30, 2012 Hi all the post of the rake of the rudder ie 5degrees as per the drawing ,we rang Garry and he indicated up to 12 o we sttled for 10o cheers gareth
gareth lacey Posted May 15, 2012 Author Posted May 15, 2012 Hi All here are some more pics of the build the first 2 are the mock up of the dash , then the elavators, elavator control brkt, final glass dash, glass bulkhead , control stick and flap actuator nut serted in,and the luggage compartment with the rudder cables and elavator cable run through Gareth $ Craig
gareth lacey Posted May 25, 2012 Author Posted May 25, 2012 Hi All more pics of the build progress pic 12 cables in conduit elavator, aerial, lights pic 13 angles sika flex to sheet (to take the wobble out) pic 14 cables cover top hat pic 15 bulkhead bracing and seat belt fixing points pic 16 brake & rudder controls frame set up (note the plummer blocks and tension spring adjuster tomorrow we will be sheeting the sides and rear decks cheers Gareth & Craig
Guernsey Posted May 26, 2012 Posted May 26, 2012 WOW! A picture is worth a thousand words so I have just saved myself 6,000. Congratulations, Alan. 1
gareth lacey Posted May 27, 2012 Author Posted May 27, 2012 Thanks John & Alan here are the pics of the side skinning and back fusalage
gareth lacey Posted May 27, 2012 Author Posted May 27, 2012 Hi All just to add ,the skins are on but all the final riveting is not completed ,we will be doing the exact spacings when the tail and turtle back are on cheers gareth & Craig
gareth lacey Posted July 7, 2012 Author Posted July 7, 2012 Skinning Finished ! hi all Craig and I have finished the fusalage skinning , elavators went on today perfect angles and degrees (must say the elavators are a bit tricky to skin ) all final riveting is finished access hatch below mass balance arm is in place and we can access all the bolts in the tail area below is a few pics Cheers Gareth 1
sfGnome Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 Umm. Dumb question, but assuming you're not aiming to fly it off, how are you going to get it off that platform when the time comes? I think I'm almost as jealous of your work space as I am of your project; almost, but not quite!
gareth lacey Posted July 7, 2012 Author Posted July 7, 2012 LOL ha ha yellow safety rails slide out, long tynes on fork lift, table as well as airplane will be lifted down .work space is utilising space above our heads we pay for it so built the mezz to work on , it will come in handy for storage later on Cheers Gareth
kgwilson Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 Great progress Gareth. I have the fuselage of mine around the side of the house while I build the wing spars. I presume the white tubing over the fuel tank carries the electrical cable or is it fuel line. I am not riveting the front deck on till after the engine goes in. Kevin
