Hi all,

Well so far I've done all my training in a Jabiru J160 and achieved my certificate but I'm now looking into possibly getting a type rating for a sports star some time in the future as for me they will be more accessible. I know there is no exact way of answering this but how long does it usually take to get a type rating on a new aircraft?

Thanks, Cuan

Wiser heads will correct me if I am wrong but I think the the J160 and Sportstar are both High Performance Nose Wheel so you are already "certificated" to fly the Sportsstar. That said I believe you will have to do a check flight before being allowed to fly one solo. Don't know whether thats a mandatory requirement or just normal safe practice though.

Hi Cuan, I am a Flying School and operate a J230 and a Sportstar, they are very different and you will take time to adjust, a well respected instructor with mainly Jab time flew my Sportstar and took a little time to adjust so allow yourself time to settle in, the controls in the Sportstar are very sensitive and the nose wheel is also and is noticeable in the take-off roll. Once you master the Sportstar you will be spoilt by its good handlng and performance. You do not need any type rating you just need someone to say you can hire it from them and you are safe and you won't hurt yourself or the plane. Mine has an Inflight adjustable prop and that needs an endorsement. A Sportstar pilot finds it difficult to adapt to the Jab because at low speed it is not as controllable as the Sportstar and the Morgan Sierra is similar as the control are very reactive at low speed.

As far as time goes a student I had who trained in Jabs elsewhere did a conversion on my Sportstar and did 3 hours and was very comfortable with it. Hope this helps

Ah OK, that clears things. I must have been confused with GA rules? that you have to be rated on each specific aircraft?

Anyway thanks for the replies they helped a lot.

GA - Group endorsement All single engine aircraft <5700kg. Heavier and multi engine require individual endorcements though some are grouped eg Cessna 336 and 337.

[with the obvious endorsement for tail wheel or CSU or R/gear etc.]

Good on you, Cuan, for bringing this up. I've been wondering the rules and requirements also. Having done my ticket in a Tecnam, wasn't sure on the requirements to have a go at a Jab, or a Morgan, or ...... There's too many that I want to have a fly of!!!!

You get an endorsement to cover a class of aircraft (eg tricycle fixed wing <5700 kg) or of equipment (eg CSU, RU) or of flying activity (eg aerobatics, formation). Endorsements are recorded on your licence and usually get a big elephant stamp in your logbook.

You get checked out in different types (eg C172, PA28) and these just rate a logbook entry.
