Trying to hold it off for as long as possible is good practice at the judgement height. It might be worthwhile to examine what you are actually achieving at the flare. The rate at which you bring the stick back is related to a few important factors like

your sink rate, A higher than normal rate of sink needs more lift to arrest it. IF you don't have a bit of airspeed up your sleeve you will land heavily unless you get the stick back quickly near the ground. (Don't stall it).

the amount of surplus energy you want to dissipate. (Excess airspeed to wash off) This gives you the possibility of a lot of lift if you pull the stick back too much or too quickly. (Ballooning).

The speed and pitch attitude at which you want to touch down. (related).

The spot you want to touch down on.

This is why no two landings can really be the same. You adjust to the circumstances that you put/find yourself in, near the ground.

FAQ, ( fair) landings that are well controlled are preferred to a situation where you pull of fmany/ several greasers and the have a shocker where you don't know what caused it. Nev
