Hi All

On Tuesday night staff had their first meeting and I want to be able to keep you informed of the outcomes of meetings within a day or two of each meeting so here are my (unconfirmed) notes of the meeting.

Attendees:

Ian Baker (Ian)

Carol Richards (Cazza)

Maynard Robinson (Robinsm)

David Isaac

Steven Beck (Ahlocks)

Absent:

Steve Bell

Recreational Flying Aviation Awareness Program - Carol Richards

  1. Create a promotional video on a DVD that can be distributed to Flying Clubs and Schools that includes young people getting into aviation, learning to fly, some greats that have started an aviation career from recreational aviation.

  2. Organise and assist Flying Clubs and Schools to create a relationship with local secondary schools

  3. Create a bullet point talk list that clubs and schools can use to give presentations on recreational aviation and aviation as a career to secondary schools.

  4. Assist Flying Clubs and Schools to engage speakers such as commercial pilots from Airlines if they would like

  5. Explore avenues of funding for this initiative

  6. SB (Ahlocks to explore relationship with REX if at all possible)...relationships with Qantas, JetStar, Virgin is also worth a try but just noted at this stage

Recreational Flying Workshops Program - Steve Bell

  1. Steve Bell had previously come up with the following suggested workshops:

  2. We can start with the “owner builder maintenance training” weekend – with at least 1.5 days practical (with the help of the local L2s). Max 12 students Min 4.

  3. Then a one day L1 training course with ½ day prac- again with the help of the local L2s. Max 12 students Min 4.

  4. Perhaps even a L4 training day (now we could invite the SAAA to add to this one for their inspectors?) Max 12 students Min 4.

  5. Finally we can arrange a full 5 day L2 starters course, but this needs a little more admin. Max 12 students Min 4.

  6. In addition if we can get CASAs acceptance we can also run a number of 2-3 day LSA C of A courses.

  7. The other thing we can do is talk to each club and see what they want.

  8. Explore the potential use of web conferencing class rooms (max 15 persons) for small workshop titles which could even include special presentations by invited presenters and not be limited to Maintenance (Ian under website program)

  9. Explore a sequence of 1hr themed workshops held each week electronically

  10. Offer Recreational Flying Workshops to Clubs and Schools for their own members as a group

Recreational Flying Chapter Program - Maynard Robinson

  11. Initiate discussions with existing Flying Clubs and Schools to ascertain what Recreational Flying could do to help them

  12. Formulate a Chapter System framework that is beneficial to both website members and flying clubs and schools

  13. Assist website users to form their own regional chapters and get their Flying Clubs and Schools involved so they to benefit by being associated with them for events etc

  14. Recreational Flying to support Club and School events in any way possible

  15. Tie in Recreational Flying initiatives with flying clubs and schools (Website, Workshops, Aviation Awareness etc)

Governing Bodies - David Isaac

(Strategic and hence confidential due to being Work In Progress)

Website - Ian

  1. Based on feedback from Clubs and Schools, create an environment (area) that supports the needs of Flying Clubs and Schools

  2. Investigate electronic means of delivering/holding special events and weekly themed workshops

  3. Based on the Recreational Flying Chapter Framework, investigate Recreational Flying also having a "Financial Member" user category with a small annual membership fee ($20 - $30?) to provide financial support in covering the costs of initiatives (eg $550 for web workshop classrooms, percentage goes to Chapters etc. But what can we give to members in return??????...their own group of private forums, first choice bookings on special events and workshops, monthly electronic magazine????

  4. Create a private forum for staff members to discuss the work in progress of initiatives

Initiatives marked for further discussion:

A National Recreational Flying Aviation Week with organised displays and vast media representations

Possible petition to be created to obtain support that RAAus initiates a member category that allows under 14.5 year olds to obtain experiences in aviation and learning to fly under 100% control of an instructor

General Discussion:

General discussion seemed to roam around the picking on Ahlocks and blaming him for anything and everything.

Next Meeting:

The next meeting will be held in 3 weeks on Tuesday 22nd May at 7pm

I am sure you all would support me in saying a huge thanks to the above people for their passion and help in taking some great initiatives forward for all recreational aviators and the industry in general.

I was judge watching Breakfast TV... One of the interviewees was Arj Barker the comedian. During the interview he talked about following his dream and learning to fly a Hang Glider at Byron Bay... He showed some footage of his first solo.

I reckon if somehow we could find a celebrity who "has the dream" and get them started on lessons... they could be great spokespeople for our sport?

Good work on the meeting... Put this post here as a suggestion for you guys.

Now I'm totally confused.

That all sounds very much like RAA TWO to me rather than a forum. Much of what is proposed is what I would expect from a proactive RAA.

Re the mention of "Recreationalflying", isn't this Aircraftpilots?

Hi guys,

that sounds great Ian.

Just a thought for you, I do volunteer work with a Australian wide charity and the technical skills required for a member is spread over 3 years, each year one set of modules of the total skills required is the target for that year, in book for that needs a sign off or via DVD. We pay $10 a year to get a loan of the DVD to enhance the skills book work.

Could that also happen here and pilots old and new could hire them from say the local flight training school for say 50cents a week and that small fee goes back to the group to help offset costs.

Do you know you can apply for grants through Commonwelth Sport and Recreation I think from memory it is either $10000 or $20000 per year.

Bob.

Well tp, if RAAUS won't, or don't want to, others will step in to do it. I'm not talking about "RAA TWO", but giving us recreational flyers (or what ever you want to call us), the access to services we want. Check out the services available in the US that are not provided by their regulatory body - that's where this initiative is going, services available for the taking, so to speak. Bring it on I say.

Are we looking at our own version of the American EAA group? If so , then i'm in. As a student pilot and an aircraft builder, what you are proposing would be of imence...amence...immense(?) value . In our chosen sport/hobby, mentoring and builders support is a resourse that needs to be fully utilized to give each and everyone of us a better chance of getting airborne , and staying airborne in the safest way possible.

These are initiatives that "Recreational Flying and Aircraft Pilots" (i.e. this website) are doing for you and all recreational aviators.
