Compulsion Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 I was flying out of Gawler one day in a GROB glider and got under a thunder head. I went from 1500ft to 10000 feet like an express elevator. I ended up with full airbrakes out and diving to get out of the lift. Very scary and potentially dangerous stuff. It looks in the video like oxygen is already being used. Gliders are great fun on a good day.
robinsm Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 The term AWESOME comes to mind. Spent my early years gliding out of the old upper Valley Gliding club in Whitemens valley behind the Trentham military camp in NZ. (both have now moved - not my fault.) The performance of the aircraft in this clip is astounding (I learned in a Rhonlerch and a Rhonadler back in the late 1960's)
eightyknots Posted May 11, 2012 Posted May 11, 2012 An amazing updraught at 2000 ft/min. (I can see the pilot's safety-consciousness clearly on display: there's even a NO SMOK.ING sign on the instrument panel)
rick-p Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 Great stuff, it's amazing what you can do without an engine to hinder your progress!
