djpacro Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 I was running Mobil Av-1 for a short while in a Lycoming Io-360 and then the problems with Continentals (only from memory) happened and lawyers got involved http://www.lieffcabraser.com/defective-products/case/98/mobil-aircraft-engine-oil While searching for that info I came across this advice which is fairly typical of "experts" these days at http://www.avweb.com/news/savvyaviator/savvy_aviator_52_thinking_about_oil_changes_196730-1.html Just a bit of light reading.

facthunter Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 What are you running it in russ. and what fuel do you use.? If you run avgas you should use an aviation oil because of the lead. They make synthetics and monogrades and multigrades. There are semi synthetic auto oils. Usually called "synthetic technology" Nev
Russ Posted May 12, 2012 Author Posted May 12, 2012 This new machine is powered by a soob ej25, running on ULP.....PULP. I actually rang "Penrites tech advice" to confirm what my supplier stated.......that semi synthetic was no longer made.......Penrite confirmed that advice, then he asked what i was running this oil in..............the moment i mentioned "aero"..........he all but hung up on me. Hang on hang on, i blurt........you misunderstood me........it's me soob car engine, so he settles down a tad, and said full synthetic is their "now" oil.
facthunter Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 They got a court case over the "green slime" so they may be a bit sensitive about aeroplanes. The synthetic oils are getting VERY expensive. I'm sure I saw "synthetic technology" on a Penrite oil container in Repco last week . If you go on the "blurb" on every one of them you will think they are all.terrific. That's what they would say, isn't it? The Product data sheet (PDS) gives some specific performance figures IF you want to go to the trouble, and if you know what you are looking for. I've yet to see one that says. With this oil, you get what you pay for., I wouldn't mind that. I think you can pay a lot for oil and not know what you are getting. Oils get blamed for things that they don't cause. wrong clearances , overheating engines. Oil won't mask faults. Nev
