djpacro Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 I used to enjoy Pickering's cartoons in the newspapers many years ago. I enjoy them even more now. I also enjoy reading his blog although I wonder how he survived his flying exploits. The stories are very serious but the style is very humourous. "LEARNING TO FLY: Since I was a kid I had a fear of heights. I didn’t like the way I had to hang on to banisters with both hands climbing stairs. Looking over a balcony made my legs go weak with vertigo. I decided to learn to fly and get this thing out of my system. This was a huge step for me and I understood the torture I was about to endure over the next three weeks. Bankstown at 7.30 am, three mornings a week and study like hell each night. The flying was terrifying but easy. I thought I had better get an aerobatic endorsement while I was at it. Loops, incipient spins, barrel rolls and engine stalls where, from 4,000ft, you stopped the engine and faced the silent aircraft directly at the ground and fell fast enough for the airflow to turn the stationary propeller. Bloody hell, the cows in the paddocks below would rapidly increase in size as you held your breath waiting for the propeller to turn and the engine to spring to life. I was a nervous wreck.
