Sapphire Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 I have a question for any electrical experts out there. I am looking for single seat a/c with dual ignition. A lot have single ignition. Is it possible to put in another cdi unit and connet both to the same plugs. Thanks, Norm

facthunter Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 Connecting both systems to a single plug usually doesn't work. Some cars used to start on coil and then switch to magneto by actually switching the HT connections while the motor is running. Two plug heads may be available. Nev
Sapphire Posted June 17, 2012 Author Posted June 17, 2012 What sort of engine are you refering to The a/c's I am looking at now have half vw engine and a rotax 447. Others will come up. Perhaps drilling another plug hole is not too complicated. It doesnt have to be for best combustion but to keep you in the air. Has any one done this?
facthunter Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 I think "Global" make a conversion for the half VW. You need a bit of strength around a plug boss. The two stroke heads should be out there. Nev

Nev Yes, I ve seen on the internet conversions done with two mags, two plugs, extra crankshaft bearing, cooling baffles. Maybe there are very tiny plugs available-say 6mm dia so strength around a plug boss is not so critical. Someone in this world must have already done it himself. Ive got a workshop ready for action.

I had a Global 2 cylinder in my Supa Pup however, it was supposed to produce 38 hp but we only managed to get 32 hp. The Rotax 447 outperformed it but of course only single ignition.
Guest ozzie Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 A version of the two cyl VW engine has been done by a company in the US called "The Better Half". Plans and kits, they did not supply assembled from memory. If you can't do the twin plug head you should still be able to run a second Mag or CDI and just run on one and switch over if the first goes US.
ben87r Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 Hummel engines have done it on the factory built, not sure if you can convert tho... http://www.hummelengines.com/

That would be a better option that anybody with a single ignition could and should do. Taking off all the heads and replacing or modifying them is a fiddly hassle-especially if you break a ring. If you replace the head, you have to probably run in new rings as well.
Sapphire Posted June 17, 2012 Author Posted June 17, 2012 Hummel engines have done it on the factory built, not sure if you can convert tho... http://www.hummelengines.com/ I notice you are building a Hummel Bird. There is one for sale near here. Will you get long engine life if you expose the heads to the airstream. Some have cowlings and baffles for more accurate cooling. The rivits attaching the wing skin to the ribs distort the skin-too much clearance I think. It doesnt have much legroom-have you tried sitting in one?
ben87r Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 I don't see any reason why hanging out the heads would decrease life but i stand to be corrected. No i haven't had a chance to get into one as of yet
Sapphire Posted June 17, 2012 Author Posted June 17, 2012 Hope you are not 6'3". I was almost in the foetal position.Engine cooling is not as simple as sticking the engine into the breeze, though it's a lot simpler. One side is cooler than the other. A Continental 0-200 I owned had air intakes, baffles, seals, strips of metal around the fins and inbetween the manifolds. Just wonder how long those open air jobs last.
ben87r Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 Na im 5'11 and 75kg so should be right. Well most of the factory built ones are expecting 1000+hrs but from what i see no one has had to many cooling issues. More cracked cases and issues to do with the balancing
