Ballpoint 246niner Posted July 27, 2014 Posted July 27, 2014 An exciting day here for us on Norfolk Island with our first taxi runs on the Norfolk Island airport while we are waiting for the paper work to be processed. Thanks Bill for fitting me in for my BFR on my very short trip to Australia and thanks also to Neil for being there as a back up. Haydn, dont taxi it too fast unless you want to get airborne, lifty these Savs. Also when you get to flying check your venting and make sure that they are pressurising equally, looks great and a nice variation on Mark Kyles. Pleasure to help where I can.
bobcharl Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 Hadyn, Posted reply on my thread before looking at yours. How's that for being self-centred? Beautiful looking aeroplane. I can understand the pride you would be feeling right now. Are you going to test fly it yourself? Bob

Bob Yes im sure we have been having many of the same experiences and "feelings" along the way like all the other Savannah builder / owners. Yes we will test fly ourselves. Hadyn
Hadyn Bell Posted August 17, 2014 Author Posted August 17, 2014 Just spent a few days down at Rangiora near Christchurch and met a great bunch of flying enthusiasts who fly in a group around the area doing strip and river bed landings. A great group of guys. Certainly was exciting doing a river bed landing. 2
Kyle Communications Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 would be exciting...I like those big tyres
eightyknots Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 New Zealand riverbeds are often made up of thousands of spherical boulders. The only way to land on them is with these kinds of balloon tyres.
rankamateur Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 If they were any bigger, they may as well have floats. These are the same size Gungy fitted aren't they? Maybe not.
terryc Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 Who are the suppliers of those tyres and what rim is required to fit them

rankamateur Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 Who are the suppliers of those tyres and what rim is required to fit them The picture is of regular and XL tyres fittes to standard 6" Savannah rims. Eighty, it costs 2Kg per tyre just to upgrade to Condors so it is going to be more than that for the big stuff.
Ultralights Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 i have a set of slick 8.5x6 tyres for my savannah ready to go on. Not my aircraft, but same tyres fitted
SDQDI Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 I wonder what the weight is of those huge tyres?...not to mention the drag at cruise speed. Once you try big tyres and see how smooth they make rough strips you would never go back (unless of course you want to tour, but even then they open up a lot of country.) Yes they are heavy and they add a lot of drag but they are so much FUN! 1
Ultralights Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 they weigh 4.5 Kg Each, load rated to 725kg at 120 Mph. as for the effect on cruise speed, i dont imagine there would be much, but it might increase fuel consumption by a small amount
eightyknots Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 i have a set of slick 8.5x6 tyres for my savannah ready to go on. Not my aircraft, but same tyres fitted That's quite an increase in size. I suppose it will be quite a lot better for bumpy strips. Eventually, when I get around to my aircraft, that is what I would be aiming for too. That opens up an interesting question, why do air craft tyres have treads? (the only thing I can think of is to stop aquaplaning on a paved runway but at the kinds of speeds a Savannah would land at, this may not be much of an issue)
AVOCET Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 F they weigh 4.5 Kg Each, load rated to 725kg at 120 Mph. as for the effect on cruise speed, i dont imagine there would be much, but it might increase fuel consumption by a small amount A friend has them on his Cub , says it a 4 knt penalty . Wonder how they'd go on the Avocet !

If so, the total weight penalty may be just 4.0 kg.
rankamateur Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 I have three ICP standard tyres and tubes down there unused, I will weigh one this afternoon and let you know what the standard one are to compare. Those New unused tyres/tubes are available if anybody needs them.
eightyknots Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 The standard tyre with tube weighs 2.4Kg I kind of guessed that they would weigh this. Are you getting the same tyres as Ultralights?
rankamateur Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 I have Condor 6.00x6 mounted up already, no place for lawn tractor tyres out here.

rankamateur Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 Do you want me to quote freight to Norfolk Island too?
Hadyn Bell Posted August 27, 2014 Author Posted August 27, 2014 Do you want me to quote freight to Norfolk Island too? Just a buy price thanks.
Hadyn Bell Posted September 13, 2014 Author Posted September 13, 2014 September 11th turned out to be a very special day for me and in tribute to the victims of 9/11 I dedicate the successful test flight of the first ever hand built aircraft on Norfolk Island that I had the privilege of test flying on my birthday. It was an extreme success and memorable moment. 3 1
