Billzilla Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 Once you've got an ugly-copter or whatever it happens to be called, (thats not important providing it flies well) Whats a ball park figure that one needs to outlay, to get great footage like this from the air?I used to fly aerobatic kites (decades ago) with a third-string to operate an on-board camera. Results like this would have been unheard of then, but i'm led to believe that they've even improved on the crystal set in recent years. It's not cheap but it is cheap to run. (as long as you don't crash too much ...) For the copter I'd just get a package deal, something like this You need radio gear to control is FPV gear And a GoPro camera The Mongrel's Shop So yeah it adds up pretty quickly but if you shop around you can do a bit better. The guy in the links above is the one I use here in Australia.

Heading off to the girlfriends for a few distractions over the weekend, so will check it all out properly when I get back. Many Thanks, Planey
planedriver Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 You might not think it's overly exciting, but I thought it was great. I have flown quite a few R/C models over the years, though not recently, Are they really difficult to fly?
Acky Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 While we're on the subject of fpv, here's a video from a mate that was taken early this week. Human error, forgot to put antenna on and I think he had the return to home mis configured.. It certainly didn't function correctly. Quiet an expensive day out.
Mick Posted February 25, 2014 Author Posted February 25, 2014 This thread has been a bit quiet lately. Here is my latest, a Hangar 9 Christen Eagle II. It's 1/4 scale with a wingspan of about 1400mm. The model was my birthday present late last year & then Santa brought me an OS GT 22cc petrol motor for Xmas. It went together pretty well as Hangar 9 stuff usually does. It would have been done in no time if I had not had to wait 2 months to get servos from Xtreme Hobbies in Brisbane - They might be cheap but their service sucks! This is my first biplane since 1990. It is fun to fly but has reminded me why we don't always fly short coupled bipes. It does look cool in the air with this great colour scheme. 4
planedriver Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 That looks real pretty in the air Mick. I know what you mean about Xtreme Hobbies, most people i've met are of the same opinion. I gave after 6 months for some parts I needed and wound up getting them from China in less than 10 days.
AlanSR311 Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 Hi Guys My 96" (scale 1:4.5) HD Spitfire MkVb finished in 402 sqd markings Power by 3W 55cc with retracts flaps panel lines and thousands of rivets F/G fuselage, foam core wing........MTOW 20 kgs 9
Mick Posted March 26, 2014 Author Posted March 26, 2014 Hi Alan, Great shots of the Spit! So is recreational flying the change of direction mentioned in the Tempest add on RC Trader? Have you had any interest in the Tempest? I would love to take on the Tempest as it is my favourite fighter, but my $$$ are all committed to getting my Boomerang finished. We have chatted on RCU were I go by "Boltman". If you look back a couple of pages on this thread you will see my latest Thunderbolt. Good to see another warbird fan in this section of the forum. Mick
planedriver Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 Looks fantastic Alan, well done and thanks for posting the pics. Kind Rgds Planey
AlanSR311 Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 Gday Mick.........long time no "type" ! yep that is my Tempest for sale and I have my 100"Mustang on RCgtrader as well......... and yes now all my time and $$$ goes into Jab and Foxbat flying. Here's a pic of my P51 ............3W80 for motivation 100"span Custom retracts seqeencing gear doors, rivets, panel lines etc etc cheers 2
Mick Posted March 27, 2014 Author Posted March 27, 2014 Hi Alan, I did see the Stang on RCT as well & actually tried to talk a mate into buying it as he recently lost a Top Flite 51. I think if we were close enough for him to drop by & see it he would be hooked. That's the hassle of living in central Queensland, we see lots of neat stuff on RCT but it is always too far to go to get it & most models are too hard to ship. Cheers!
AlanSR311 Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 G'day Mick..........funny you say that as I often see the opposite.....lots of models I would like to buy seem to be FNQ The Big Stang is a great flyer.........with a brand new 3W80 it really hauls ar$e. I have a guy interested in the Mustang but only if I'll sell my Spitfire as well..............torn between loves...........$$$ for flying or the Spitfire (which I rarely fly anymore)
planedriver Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 As an old model builder I can relate to your aprehension. Not always easy to make a decision, but if you do sell it, only look forward to future interests and try not to look back. A bit like getting a new woman in your life I suppose:bash:
Mick Posted March 28, 2014 Author Posted March 28, 2014 I have a guy interested in the Mustang but only if I'll sell my Spitfire as well..............torn between loves...........$$$ for flying or the Spitfire (which I rarely fly anymore) Sell the Stang & Spit, keep the Tempest. That's easy for me to say with Tempest as my favourite. I am lucky with my wife loving full size flying so I don't have to choose one or the other. The full size is a "we" thing and the modelling is my thing. Full size flying does mean I don't spend as much time model flying but sometimes we have to make sacrifices.
AlanSR311 Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 G'day Mick I have very long leash '.........as such 'er in doors lets me do pretty much what I want:thumb up: well mostly anyway.........I just don't get the time to fly models......when the WX is good I tend to go fly real stuff (Moorabbin is 3 mins drive from me) and now looking at doing my PPL it's time to stop spending on models and focus on another avenue to haemorrhage $$$. The bride does not like flying in "little toys" as she calls the Jab........but has been up gliding with me and certainly no interest in models so it works pretty well
Capn Wannabe Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 I haven't flown RC seriously for a long time now...here's an Ugly Stik I built in about 2003. Found plans on the interwebz and modified them in CAD, before building it. Only a baby - 54" span, weighs in at 2.1kg with a .46 up front.
Mick Posted May 19, 2014 Author Posted May 19, 2014 This thread has been a bit quiet so I thought I would put this up. 4.6 metre wingspan Decathlon. Not mine, but I did get to have a fly of it a couple of weeks ago. 3
Mick Posted November 4, 2014 Author Posted November 4, 2014 A couple of weeks ago I took a short drive ( 20 hours each way ) from Gladstone Qld to Cootamundra NSW for the "Invitational Scale Classic Downunder" scale competition. I flew my P-47 Thunderbolt "Rough & Ready" in the flying only category and was fortunate to also fly a twin to "R&R' in the form of "Slick Chick" in the Team category. Slick Chick is the latest model out of the molds by a friend of mine and has been "scaled out" a bit more than previous models. As the two models are of squadron mates I reckon they look pretty cool together........ 8 3
Kyle Communications Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 God people still fly control line?.....40 years ago I flew my last control line model...Nobler...great aircraft too 1 1
planet47 Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 Yeah they do fly them still. Recently went to a day at a place called Obadiah where there was a number of control line models being flown and I found them entertaining. 1
planedriver Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 There's a guy who regularly flies one in a paddock opposite the old Hawker De Havilland complex at Bankstown Airport. He looks a bit like a spinning version of this. I remember that feeling well! ======================================
red750 Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 Not specifically a model aircraft video, but there are many model planes in it. Worth a look.
