Tomo Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 Question for you all! What is your opinion on cowl flaps on approach? I usually keep them closed during the approach because in my thinking you don't really want to suddenly chill the engine on approach when the power setting is in it's lowest state. I've noticed some people recommend to have them open in the ready for a go-around, which also makes sense in that case. I suppose there is no right or wrong exactly, as it depends on the day - cold, hot etc... but just curious to what the majority thinks. Dankè
Guest Howard Hughes Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 Cowl flaps closed for approach, open during after landing checks.
av8vfr Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 Hi Tomo, I was instructed that we need cowl flaps open when you have high power and low airspeed, like take-off. Once in the circuit for landing, temps should have stabilised from the descent and cowl flaps can add drag for the landing phase (depending on type). Yes, they also should be ready for a go-around. At the end of the day, it is easier to have them locked in a checklist than going through more assessments during the landing phase. Matt
frank marriott Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 Hard to go past the Pilots Handling Notes I haven't read about (or flown for that matter) an a/c with cowl flaps for a few years now but was always open for landing. - Not during low power decent. FrankM 1
