Guest ozzie Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 A little while ago i mentioned here that i would like to fly in the USA under the FAR103 rule. Some thought that it could not be done by a non US resident. Looks like it has been done by Aussie John Gilpin. Here is the link to his blog. http://jgwalkaboutusa.blogspot.com.au/ ozzie
Yenn Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 What is John's nationality. From memory he sounds like a yank, but it has been many years since I met him. I am pretty sure you can fly a US plane even if you are not a US citizen. They have a big industry training UK pilots.
Guest Maj Millard Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 The yanks, unlike our system, are happily to recognize an overseas qualification. All you would need to do is find an instructor, and get a check flight in a similiar type to what you wish to fly. Most aircraft rental, or flying clubs/schools should be able to arrange to accomodate your needs without too much drama, as long as your license is current and equivilent...... As a comparison, one company based in the Brisbane area had a great thing going arranging tours with visiting American pilots, and renting them single-engined Cessnas so they could tour freely and spend cash in our country, until our friendly and helpfull regulator decided it didn't like it, and pretty much closed them down ..........................................................................Maj...
Guest ozzie Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 If you read through his blog he leaves the plane in the US and travels into Canada where he grew up. Also at the beginning he explains why he chose 103 ultralight over LSA etc. NON US citizens cannot register an aircraft. Maj, lot's of paperwork with TSA and homeland security before a non US can fly or train over there now. Strange how you can't register an aircraft in your own name but you can still rent one. ( after all the hoops jumped through). 103 hasn't changed since you were there.
Kyle Communications Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 JG is a Canadian but i think he has been living here since the late 1960's....he is 74 I think he fits a lot in for his age
Guest Maj Millard Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 Sure as hell does...I'm envious and hope I've got the stamina to do the same when I retire !...................Maj...
frank marriott Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 The US is (at least was) much easier to get a licence then here with CASA I was at Oshkosh some years ago and went to a FAA stall saying get your US licence here All they wanted was your Ausy licence and logbook. I got and still have a "USA commercial licence " for any single or multy engine land based aircraft with the conditions 1. Only on aircraft endorsed on the Australian licence 2. Cannot fly for hire or reward without a green card. 3. VFR only without a flight test. I am not suggesting that an operator would give me an aircraft without a flight test. Just to get the licence was so easy. I doubt CASA would be that practicable.
Yenn Posted September 22, 2012 Posted September 22, 2012 The reason that overseas visitors were stopped flying here was the need for an ASIC. That may seem silly to you when you consider that the Yanks don't have any equivalent, they also don't have any mandated security system for the aircraft. Makes you wonder when ASIC was brought in because of what happened in the USA
Kyle Communications Posted September 22, 2012 Posted September 22, 2012 The ASIC was in long before 911.....I had to have one and also my staff way back in the late 1990's when we did all the airside radios for all the airlines and the refuelers. cost a fortune to get them all they were not cheap and you had to go through a federal police check
Guest Maj Millard Posted September 22, 2012 Posted September 22, 2012 Aussie paranoia.............hinders our progress, we could be great but we ain't.......................................Maj...
