Just a question to builders in South East Qld, where do you source your square and round aircraft grade (6061-T6) aluminium tubing from? It seems Performance metals and Airport metals are mentioned most frequently, but is there a local supplier, or do you just get it shipped up?

Aluminium Service & Supply in Zilmere used to be the place, but I think Capral bought them out a few years back. The 2 you mentioned are the only others I know of. Best do up a list and ship it all at the same time.

If Capral bought out AS&S I can tell you from experience that they won't sell you anything if you tell them you're building an airplane.

Try Alsun Aluminium. I used to own an Aluminium fabrication business and found the owner Steve Lee to be very helpful when I was looking for odd extrusions etc. They carry a huge standard range of SHS, RHS, Tube, Angles, solid rod, flat bar, sheet, plate etc & will source special orders from local and offshore manufacturers. That was 2 years ago so there's a good chance things are still the same. They have distribution outlets in Brisbane (Brendale) & Warana on the Sunshine Coast. The phone No is 07 5437 6123. You can check their catalogue out at www.alsun.com.au Personally I'd steer clear of Capral. I had no end of problems with product sourced from them.

Thanks for the replies. I looked at the Alsun catalogue and it looks like they have a good range of square and round tube, plus a few other bits and pieces that will be handy, will give them a try.

Try Action Aluminium they do a lot of specialist alu for cnc places also the complete range of tube and special shapes I have found them to be fantastic.....They used to be the guys from Smart aluminium...The alu monster bought out alu services so some of the guys then started Smart alu and they were kicking caprals bum so Capral bought them out as well and the guys then started Action and they are still kicking Caprals bum.....I use Action all the time they do have some 6061 std product but I am sure they can get it for you and their pricing is usually the lowest around
