Squirrel Posted December 2, 2012 Posted December 2, 2012 This is my 1st post to say hi to all aviators Down Under. I am in South Africa and just fly for fun. I own an Aquilla wheight shift microlight, but has a PPL and fly Cessna, Piper, Jabi and other 3 axis. I love the outdoors and like to go to the bush camping and is into biking too. In fact anything that can add adrenaline in the blood is on my 'like' list. One of my bucket list items is to go to OZ for a long holliday.
mAgNeToDrOp Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 Welcome squirrel , which airfield do you fly out of in SA?
Squirrel Posted December 3, 2012 Author Posted December 3, 2012 Thank you mAgNeToDrOp. The PPL flying is mainly from Wonderboom (wonder tree) just north of Pretoria and I must actually still start with the microlight. Hopefully I will get a hanger at Kroon airfield, north west of Pretoria, a small private grass strip. GA a/c is realy expensive these days and ML's give freedom. ... Gustav 1
mAgNeToDrOp Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 Nice, I spent a few years in the nelspruit area, flew out of FANS and Kruger? ( I forget the airport name) mostly as hangar rat/ map holder but was good fun flying into the game lodges around Kruger national park. I hear you about GA costs, thank goodness for raaus otherwise I would have the flying characteristics of a half brick..... (Debatable if you ask my instructors ;)
Squirrel Posted December 4, 2012 Author Posted December 4, 2012 Small world. In which years have you been here and what did you do?. Nelspruit and surroundings has a lot to offer espesially with all the game parks and wildlife. The biggest airfield in Kruger is Skukuza and close to Nelspruit, Witrivier etc. I see you are in Perth. There are so many south africans in Australia, some call Perth home away from home, but they are everywhere. My kids also plan to go. Both are highly qualified and will add value.

GA flying has A L W A Y S been expensive when compared to our stuff. . . . . I used to fly commercial beasts for a few years. . . ., but after the first few months, there was no. . . . "FUN" in the flying any more, it was just B****y hard work, especially when you had to "Hand load" a cargo because the airfield's forklift was always. . . ."Waiting for an awkward part. . . ." Anyhow, welcome to the forum, I only just joined myself,. . . . there's a lot of nice people on here, and you will always get a welcome, and lots of useful info from the experienced worthies in the forum population. Phil xx
