I built my aircraft & its reg VH I did the Maintenance course through the SAAA to allow me to sign off & issue the new MR. If I purchase a factory built aircraft new from factory Reg RAA Can I still do the maintenance myself & issue the new MR.

 

I ask this question only because I have had different answers & different intereptation of what can & can't be done.

There's no MR with RAA , and unless the AC is being used for hire or in a school you can do your own maintenance,,,,,whether you should is a whole other issue!

If Tony has built a GA reg plane and done the maintenance course, I would think that he would be esponsible enough to work out what he should or should not do to a factory built plane. I don't know how much more he would need to do to become a level 2 maintainer.

 

To use the maintenance release and CASA schedule 5 would be a good idea for RAAus owners. No need to comply with the letter of the law, just use it as a guide for maintenance.

IIRC the SAAA maintenance course is only for the specific aircraft that was constructed, it does not apply to any other aircraft or to any other aircraft of the same "make" built by other people.

The SAAA MPC has nothing to do with actual hands on work but is about the responsibilities of the owner/builder/maintainer, and yes you can only maintain the aircraft you have built . CFI, I think we can , as L1's maintain our own ultralight regardless of the reg number, it's only when we invoke paying customers that the maintenance gets more serious, that's my understanding of the regs

You are right the MPC has nothing to do with hands on work its all about the REG's, but in completing this course it gives you the right to do the maintenance on that aircraft you built & issue the MR. Yes I am quite capable of doing a full annual which I have done on prevouis aircraft I have owned. Im glad i posted this question cause it has highlighted some misconceptions that need to be put into spec.

Your on the ball there Yenn schedule 5 is a great guide line to follow & a good idea for all who do their own maintenance.

24- registered are able to be maintained by L2's...are u one Tony?

CFI no Im not a L2. So if I wanted to do the maintenance on a new factory built aircraft "Would I have to hold a L2"?.

The SAAA course itself is not specific (but is a pre-requisite). The CASA document that allows a builder to maintain his/her own VH registered, owner built aircraft is specific to that aircraft. However, CASA has recently released a draft document that will allow the purchaser of an aircraft that is similar to the one they have built, to maintain it. Not yet law as far as I know, but it seems like a sensible amendment to me.

I both like this and wonder if its really a good idea , kinda opens the door for parallel maintenance , I've built a Kitfox type and an RV , could I start a business specialising in maintaining these and similar types , all with no formal training? Could open a can of worms!

A builder doing maintenence on there own or simaler aircraft makes sense however some people should not be builders.

 

Building a aircraft requires a different mindset and a understanding of risk managment.

 

Rather than accept a part or drawing a builder needs to access what would happen if that part failed.

 

If a failure would leed to becoming a smoking heap you need to ask is the part in serviceable condition, can it be made better or can redundancy be improved.

 

None of this she'll be right or l think its ok.

 

l have a saying "if in doubt throw it out"

 

Now saying this a modification should be run past the designer, engineer or tech officer before being fitted.

This subject really gets a lot of different opinion's on who can & can't do what.Maybe this should be a workshop topic to be covered at NATFLY. In my position I know what I have to do & follow with the maintenance of my Experimental VH reg aircraft. All I need to know is if I purchase from the factory a new aircraft registered RAA can I as the owner do the maintenance on that aircraft, Im not talking about any modifications just maintenance in accordandance with the manufactures maintenance manual.

The answer is yes, you can maintain your own aircraft as long as it is not made available for hire or use in a school, that is when an L2 is required.

Sloper.the SAAA course covers what you are talking about. It is basicly paper warfare to keep you GA legal.

 

As far as the new similar aircraft proposal by CASA, the example they gave was an RV4 builder would be able to work on an RV8. They are similar, but it didn't mention the RV6, which I believe is also similar. So how similar would you need to be?

I OWN a 24 reg aircraft.

 

I am NOT a L2.

 

I CAN do the maintenance on MY aircraft only.

 

The aircraft is for my PRIVATE use only. (No training)
