ayavner Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 The more things change, the more they stay the same 7
dodo Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 I sympathise with his frown and deep concentration dodo 1
ayavner Posted January 23, 2013 Author Posted January 23, 2013 and the fact that he has this bank of computers right behind him, but his instructor insisted "just in case"... <ducks> 3
damkia Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Now, what is that "1 in 60 rule" to the fourth dimension???? -------- This could be a competition for the best caption.....
motzartmerv Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Allow for the solar wind.... Correct for time dilation and temporal distortion.... Compute the gravitational lensing effect.... Minus 12 deg's for magnetic variation..... Carry the 2.... Answer= Get a bloody GPS 2

Sapphire Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 That would have been taken in the 1960's and dead reconing was the cheapest way to navigate.
damkia Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 That would have been taken in the 1960's and dead reconing was the cheapest way to navigate. More likely Stardate 2250's or so... http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Stardate 1
Phil Perry Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 correct for wind.... oh wait.... Solar wind perhaps . . . . . ??
ayavner Posted January 24, 2013 Author Posted January 24, 2013 you know what'd be cool - a really old vintage one, like made out of brass and engraved - does that even exist?
Guest Howard Hughes Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 I could be wrong, but I don't think Spock was the navigator so wouldn't have had any need for one of those! Now where's Chekov?
ayavner Posted January 24, 2013 Author Posted January 24, 2013 "dammit Jim, I'm a vulcan not a navigator!" oh wait.... 2
damkia Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 "dammit Jim, I'm a vulcan not a navigator!"oh wait.... "...I'm a not a !" 2
Yenn Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Ded reckoning is still the cheapest way to navigate
facthunter Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Good on you Yenn, for getting the Ded. right.( Most say Dead.) I thought the best way to go was by the "beam me up Scotty" method. The thing the vulcan has is a "prayer wheel". That was what it was called. Nev
motzartmerv Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 I could be wrong, but I don't think Spock was the navigator so wouldn't have had any need for one of those! Ahhh... Todays ATPL holder, so out of touch with the common man (vulcan)...hehehe...He is clearly using the quantum formula side of the whiz wheel, not the solar wind drift side. he's probably trying to convert litres- imperial gallons-Us gallons- kilos-pounds..Obviously using starship echo...;)

motzartmerv Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Its a starship, but not as we know it....
frank marriott Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 echo...... Had almost forgotten about the delightful mark 4
motzartmerv Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Ive been trying to forget .... Hence the drinking problem... 1

The thing the vulcan has is a "prayer wheel". That was what it was called. Nev I have the one I bought around 1979 and it has written "Kane Dead Reckoning Computer" Though I wish they did not use the word "dead" My first navigational training had this contraption and maps laid out on my lap in the cockpit working out time and distance and eta. using a wac scale and a lot of mental computing. After that nonsense I taught myself how to navigate and all you need is the map infront of you and some simple caculating using 10 minute markers.
kaz3g Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 the thing the vulcan has is a "prayer wheel". That was what it was called. Nev it most certainly was... And once you had passed Nav you prayed you would still be able to remember how to use it AND fly the aeroplane. kaz
