Robertvn Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 Hi, my name is Robert, Have wanted to learn to fly for 30 years, but I am now just starting, so far only a couple of lessons in a Sport Star, loving it Live in Tasmania, Australia, spend quite a bit of time in Queensland, this is where I have been taking lessons. Did get the opportunity to visit the Jabiru factory the other day, and was quite impressed, just starting to learn about different planes and licences, e.g.. RAA GA PPL etc Hope some of my questions can be answered in this forum, not sure if I have enough knowledge to add input, least not for some time Cheers 1
DGL Fox Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 Hi Robert, Yes I am an older guy and I am still training as well up in Caboolture QLD, money is always a consideration while you are training and it never seems to get any cheaper, I have had to have a break over Xmas from training because of this, I don't like it because it is good to keep it all fresh in your mind but what can you do, real life before pleasure I'm afraid. I read how these other people go solo in 15 hrs etc and at times that depressed me as I thought, am I just stupid or something why haven't I gone solo yet but then, one day I was told by my CFI that it is not a race to go solo or get your pilots licence its a journey everyone takes their own time, so thats the way I look at it now. :) I have seen on this forum that there are a lot of very experienced flyers here so don't be afraid to ask questions, I think you will learn a lot just reading the posts, I know I have. Good luck with your training Rob and have fun... David

Keep us up to date with your progress, and don't hold back on asking any questions.... Cheers Neil Hey Neil. . . You sound like a friend of mine. . . . . My very good friend Mike O'Grady got his PPL two years ago. He is 74 now, and started his flight training when he was in his late teens. At his first training school in Ireland, they had a scruffy looking Tiger Moth and some Austers, and a couple of things he couldn't remember but they were all taildraggers. He did about six hours, then things changed and he dropped it for a while.. . . . fast forward to when he moved to England, ( I always asked him why the grass in Ireland was so,. . . GREEN. . . . he replied. . . " sure we're all over here walking on yours. . . " ) Anyhow. . . he went to a training school near to London, and flew Austers, then something with a wheel at the front. . . . . ( he couldn't remember what ) he said that each time he went for a lesson, it was in either a nosewheel, or tailwheel aircraft. . . they didn't differentiate apparently. . . . then he met a lssie, and got married.. . . fast forward again,. . .he had another go at flying training with a school which had modern Cessna 150 aircraft, all with nosewheels,. . . . then, another fast forward, to 2010, he finally passed his last cross country exam and got a licence, but not before he had got lost and closed down East Midlands Airport for a while, after getting lost on a navex due to a radio AND transponder failure. He is now flying regularly in Warriors / Cessnas and is a Tower air ground radio volunteer. By Mike's reckoning, it has taken him Fifty one years to get licenced. We regularly fly together to the Isle of Man to watch the TT races. He is the most professional, unflappable, laid back and relaxed pilot I have ever had the priviledge to fly alongside. Just goes to show, even oldies can do it. . . . . ( ! )
