There has been talk of a pilot shortage for the last 50 years. Sure there have been boom times and I'm sure there will be many more, but unless airlines are parking aircraft because of a lack of pilots, then I wouldn't call it a shortage!

At Redcliffe Aero Club on 3rd year apprentice wages in 1977 I was paying $18ph solo in a 1966 model C150 and $22ph Dual! Able to do 1 hour per week with no financial stress!

Harder to achieve these days........must be something to do with being married!!!!

From Plain and Pilot Mag Oct Edition Pg 42 onwards some snippets of interestat current training rates we will fall short of Boeings predictions by 2000 pilots per month....Even the military which typically is oversupplied with candidates is experiencing a shortage for the first time in memory......revealed this year they are short 200 fighter pilots and will be short by 700 pilots by 2021. The airforce is currently offering an unheard of incentive package with a signing bonus of $25,000 for each of 9 years ...... The military shortage is being fueled by pilots jumping to commercial for better pay and conditions....

I dont think thats been the case before......

With the large numbers of orders being place, one would expect a shortage of pilots. I know some quite old pilots still flying Jets. They can't operate in command in Europe, over 60?? Nev

Have a look at the 'estimates' quoted in an article by Steve Creedy in todays Australian. see www.theaustralian.com.au It's a bit unclear whether the estimates for new flight crew take into account the retirement of existing crew - but no matter, the numbers are staggering. It would help Australias' chances of picking up even part of the training if our costs were not so high.

Also on the same page, and also by Steve Creedy, is an interesting story on our new Federal Minister Warren Truss - wherein he mentions pilot training and the need to assist pilots outside of the current Uni/HECS system. Worth a read. Probably a more detailed press release on the Ministers own website?

happy days,

ah yes but a lot of schools now have halls and there are hospitals roads and railways being built - just like building a house really - you need a mortgage otherwise you have to sell off the family silver

Like I said, the media has been talking about the 'pilot shortage' for many years. While I certainly agree that opportunities in the immediate future look quite good, you need to temper that knowing about 50% of aircraft orders actually never get built, but rather get optioned to another type, or delayed indefinitely. I expect the actual demand will be around 50-60% of forecast, but that still will provide plenty of opportunity for Australian trainers (and pilots).

I recently did a ring/Email around locally as the cost of lessons for rec certificate

and to my surprise the local aero club was one of the most expensive

I thought clubs where formed to keep costs down and make things easier??

Anyone who gives you a "cost" for a certificate is having a lend of you. Its impossible to quote a figure. Even the hourly rates dont mean a great deal because an extra few hours lugged onto you (even at a cheap rate) will soon cost more anyway.

You could get an estimate only, and even those are ballpark.
