Kyle Communications Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 This has been coming for a while there was a thread about it some months ago
Kyle Communications Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 Fine for 19 rego and ELSA but not factory builts 1
damkia Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 Fine for 19 rego and ELSA but not factory builts Clarification? "Fine" as in "OK", or penalty?
Kyle Communications Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 The problem is the LSA rules..there is currently no approved (put world aviation approval code in here cause I cant remember the letters required) CS prop for LSA aircraft in the world so not allowed on a LSA but can be used on a 19 or ELSA. I believe the airmaster guys are going through approvals now but how long I havent heard.
Stearman Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 The problem that has come to light is that the whole of LSA is based on the American standards known as ASTMs. Because LSA in America does not allow in flight adjustable props there are no ASTMs on in flight adjustable props. When LSA was set up in Australia CASA & RAAus in their wisdom decided to allow in flight adjustable props, something they have now realised that for which there is no standard. Are we now going to be told these props are no longer legal? If so who is going to pay for replacements for props that were purchased and fitted under a clearly published regulation? I hope these props will be allowed to stay in use under some sort of grandfather clause, or....... Can anyone spell "Class Action"? 2
Kyle Communications Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 Thats the code I couldnt remember ASTM

In the real world they would have to prove multiple problems / incidents having occurred prior to even considering a ban. But yeah, we live in an alternative universe where even simple light bulbs got banned so who knows.
fly_tornado Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 Don't forget the retractable undercarriage is also not allowed in LSA. Fun times ahead for all those owners of European designs with fast props and retracts registered as LSAs.

What does merit enquiry is any component fitted to an LSA aircraft that is not made by the aircraft manufacturer such as brakes, tyres or lot of European LSA's use the same composite undercarriage legs. If they apply this to props where does it stop?

If they apply this to props where does it stop? http://www.andersonaviation.com.au/ Have had this on sale for a couple of years here - no issues with CASA/RA-Aus registration under the LSA rules. This is available with both C/S prop and full retract undercarriage. Our rules also have a large element of the European rules in them too, to cater for the importation of these and other Euro machines. The Europeans have a very mature LSA sector that we simply could not ignore, with well known and respected manufacturers of LSA's.
facthunter Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 The Pioneer 300 is retract and some other all metal low wing and there may be others.. Maybe they are nor LSA's. Lsa as a specification always seemed to me to be some sort of inbetween stopgap. Not one thing or the other with a 600 Kg carrott. Propellers are always a safety risk but much less when they are certified or made simply of wood..Nev
