Kyle Communications Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 I went to the Ozrunways presentation at the Sunshine Coast Aero Club today. The club put on a fantastic event and the tucker was great also. Rowan managed to get there after dodging a lot of weather from Tamworth this morning. The presentation was on the new V3 coming out in a couple of weeks. Some fantastic improvements also he was taking on ideas for further releases and also spoke of what they are working on for the future right now. All in all a fantastic couple of hours. I would like to thank the Sunshine Coast Aero Club for putting this on I really enjoyed it. 1
Methusala Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 Gday, was anything revealed of plans for Android based Ozrunways software?Don
Kyle Communications Posted February 23, 2013 Author Posted February 23, 2013 There will never be any android version was the comment....sorry for all you apple haters out there but to do a android version would cost way too much money...there is over 200,000 lines of code to be rewritten to get to android format. If you want the best and easiest aviation software at a unbelievable price you will just have to bite the bullet and get yourself a cheap Ipad
Methusala Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 Thank you for the swift reply, I simply don't like the limits that I think are imposed by Apple technology! Don. 1
Kyle Communications Posted February 23, 2013 Author Posted February 23, 2013 I also agree with your point even though I use Mac's and iPads also win doze...I hate itunes I think it is the worst virus ever but I bite my tongue and use it because I have to its part of the apple makeup....we all dont like certain things but we use them because they usually work well. You use whatever is the BEST application regardless of the platform...otherwise you cut your nose off despite your face
dazza 38 Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 Just to add to what Mark has said IRT never being a android version. In the FAQ section of the OZ runways site. They mention that it would take them two years to write the android version. They simply dont have the resources. Anyway- I bit the bullet & bought a Iphone 5 last time I was at home from work. I have have Oz runways on it & I went for a fly with it & tested it out. I reckon its fantastic, even on the little Iphone.
Kyle Communications Posted February 23, 2013 Author Posted February 23, 2013 Much better on the iPad Dazza...just need a second hand one if you get the 3g version you dont need a sim in it at all but the internal gps will work fine other than that with a non 3g version you will need a direct connect pluging gps like the bad elf or a bluetooth gps like the dual. I think I ill get a mini iPad now with the 3g I find the normal ipad3 I have even though it is mounted away from me in the top right corner of the cabin still a little large the ipad mini will sit on a kneepad easily as well
Methusala Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 I think that the time will come, not too long, when Android Navy app will be viable. Android's ability to interface with common computers must be a driving force. I do remember the vhs vs beta debacle when an inferior technology stole the show. I hope that this will not be repeated (as the OJ Simpson case may be re pissorius). Not by any means an it guru, just involved observer.
frank marriott Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 Kyle Is the mini A5? I only mention this with reference to CAAP 233-1(0) , 7.5 Screen size (EFB) Might be worth considering?
frank marriott Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 All good, I thought they have been smaller, only seen pictures of them
Methusala Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 Has anyone had experience with 'Air Navigation Pro'? This is an Android program out of Switzerland. I looked at some reviews by subscribers last night. It originated as an iPad app but is being developed for Android. Seemed to be progressing though has still unresolved problems. At least some hope for us 'Apple haters'. Don
Hongie Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 Side note to kyle comms.. You dont have to use itunes if you dont want to mate.. I have an iphone and an ipad, and i rarely if ever have to use itunes. Use iFunbox and CopyTrnasSuite to manage your documents and music files etc. BAsically drag and drop management like you would expect. /offtopic 1
cscotthendry Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 ... I do remember the vhs vs beta debacle when an inferior technology stole the show. LOL, that was because the VHS people put waaaay more money into marketing it, which just proves the saying "given enough horsepower, a battleship can fly"...Nevermind that battleships were never designed or intended to fly. It is a pity that they probably won't bring out an Android version. I think if they ever decided to, we'd probably see them start charging for the app as well as the charts. Given what some of the other aviation apps cost, I was astonished to find that the OzRunways app is (truly) free. Disclaimer: I have an iPad mini 3G/LTE with 32GB memory which I love/hate.

I too dislike iTunes INTENSELY.
MarcK Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 As I say to all that complain about how restrictive the apple environment is and I am the first to admit it can be annoying. The benefit of having such a closely controlled environment is that it just works. No instability very small risk of malware and viruses. And the app developers must follow a tight set of rules that ensures that things run smoothly. I use an android phone and it is miles behind in the areas I have mentioned above. End off topic rant. To add something on topic I think oz runways is a great little app and I can't wait to get to the point in my flying where I can actually use it to its potential.
Methusala Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 I agree with you MarcK. It is a shame that sometimes "gated communities" are required to combat the criminality that exists (in small numbers) everywhere. Android is a large but vulnerable platform. I also like Ozrunways.
Guest Andys@coffs Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 I have an android tablet and an apple tablet.... android came first and the Ipad later..... Both at the end of the day for me arent serious compute platforms they are for consuming digital media (ebooks, music, videos and browsing...) and a few specialised apps IMHO the apple is the better platform of the 2 that I have, however it was $250 vs $750 so you'd wanna expect that the latter was better....... The benefit is, having shelled out the cash if I sold it now Id likely get 2/3rds to 3/4 of what I paid for it.......The android one.....dont think that is at all likely... The variability of configuration I can see in the adroid world would be a problem for coders, in Apple world other than memory there really are very few configurations and at the OS layer the differences that there are (ver 1, 2 3 or 4) amd plus or minus GPS and telco data ) are likely abstracted from the app and noticeable only in performance terms for the different versions Andy
fly_tornado Posted February 28, 2013 Posted February 28, 2013 I am on my way to the GoodGuys to pickup my 4th Asus Nexus 7 since November! You get a lot of tablets for $349
Guest Andys@coffs Posted February 28, 2013 Posted February 28, 2013 4th since November!!! you know the batterys rechargeable dontcha?:amazon:I suppose tahts one way of gettinga Quad processor..... Others may take Tegra 3 you take Nexus 4
Kyle Communications Posted February 28, 2013 Author Posted February 28, 2013 Now that is funny Andy....maybe its a android user thing
fly_tornado Posted February 28, 2013 Posted February 28, 2013 The speakers keeps coming loose inside the case. I suspect the heat the 3G chip creates is melting the glue. Its a great little tablet, the touch screen is soo repsonsive. Just waiting for Asus to pull finger out
Guest Andys@coffs Posted February 28, 2013 Posted February 28, 2013 I see....so thats what you meant when you said you got a lot of tablet for $X...you meant you got a battery that doesnt ever degrade causee you get to swap it very regularly....I supppose when you go to sell it eventually you'll get close to what you paid as well "For sale nearly new (arent they all!) Nexus 7 #93...." Actually in all seriousness ASUS is a good solid brand, my 1st choice when it comes to choosing internal PC components....There is a $ premium but in general (NEXUS tablets seemingly excepted) the return rate is pretty low and you have to save a fair few $ to justify a retrun trip or two......
fly_tornado Posted February 28, 2013 Posted February 28, 2013 nexus 7 3G is a perfect tablet for flying its screen is super hi-res, 220 pixels per inch and its really really bright. Just don't drop it cause the bevel on the side is really thin. I reckon I'll drop it eventually. I have bought a fair bit of Asus stuff over the years and this is the first time I have had to use the after sales support, bit useless.
