Pylon. that sounds like Mike Busch, who looks after maintenance of several aircraft. Not by actually doing it but by co ordinating and advising. Cessna tried to bring in their own AD and Mike got FAA to jump on Cessna for trying to make work for themselves atowners expense.

Anybody got rough figures on SIDS compliance for mid 1970's model C150's? There are a few floating around in half decent condition for a song, yes SIDS will be an issue but from the few I have seen lately I think the economy is forcing some of these owners more so than the SIDS issue.

My 182 cost less than $20k,and that included new seatbelt and door handles that on their own were about $1500, we did not expect any issues and did not find any, but mine was a low time private acft.

we are currently putting our 172 back together in the sids programme. very little remedial work has been needed, however the work involved dismantling/ cleaning and VERY close inspection/testing of EVERYTHING, has involved 4 wks of full time work so far, with the maintainence organization, means a BIG labour bill alone. (several 182's being worked on beside ours have needed substantial remedial / corrosion repairs done in addition), and I would be VERY suspect of a Cessna sids done with a cheap bill.(not done properly in my opinion), under 20,000 unless the owner did a lot of the work under supervision. expect 6 weeks labour cost by $100 hr x 240 hrs(without repairs needed, which is rare) = $24000 min

oh , and remember that the sids programme is ongoing after the first major disassembly ,clean up,remedial one.

it's possible that by end june 2016 (for private use airframes) that up to half the older Cessna fleet may be grounded, due non compliance, not passing the initial sids. there is some sad planes out there, I've seen em, just look for corrosion worms under the paint, derivet that area and a horror story is exposed. many will be/are being parted out for scrap, so buy at a price that reflects the work to do.

The quote on my C152 is $16,500 for the initial inspection including NDT & MPI, but excluding Eddy Current inspection which requires a specialist to be flown in. Cable installation, 100 hourly and any repairs at $110/hr. This is a special rate due to the financial stress of the drought and economic downturn. This aircraft has spent the last 20 years in arid areas of Western Qld. Sounds like $25 - 30k for an aircraft only worth that, but I doubt you could ask for $60k resale, particularly competing with aircraft that are not required to do SIDS.

Some people are taking advantage of the SIDS and are buying pre SID Cessna's cheap and exporting them back to the states.

Great idea, thanks Dazza. Seems CASA will make aviation safe as there won't be any planes left !

Careful what you wish for FT. It will happen a lot sooner to virtually all LSAs because they are virtually all build substantially flimsy compared to the old GA aircraft. If you think GAs should be scrapped after 40 years it will be half that for conventionally built LSAs, the exception may be composite built LSAs only.

yeah I have already seen a western based tecnam with nasty corrosion beginning, and there ain't much metal thickness there to do remedial work to start with

having aircraft that have unlimitted lifespans is bad for the industry, especially with falling pilot population. you need new product to inspire people to consume
