ASIC Card

Just received my ASIC renewal notice. Despite dutifully wearing it for years, I have never been asked for it.

 

If I save $160 and a lot of hassle collecting the required photos, copies and endorsements, at what airports am I likely to be pinged? (Is there a list of places which require an ASIC card?)

Like you OK. I had mine for years and never asked to produce it. I wish someone would review the whole thing and make sense of it. Funny thing though, I have inadvertently told a fib. I used it to gain access to a facility at a major airport for a conducted tour and the one we carry is remarkable that it gives access to most areas in aus which few other ASIC's do. I wouldn't attempt to justify it on that basis. Unfortunately flying is becoming more of a hassle than ever with no sign of it ever getting better.. Nev

So true, Nev. This seems to apply to many activities, especially the enjoyable one...have you stumbled on a Fundamental Law of Nature?

another cash making scam, Defence force member IDs are no longer acceptable within a security controlled airport.... so now all Defence force members now have to pay for an asic.

 

funny, a blackhawk full of SAS soldiers, cant land at a civillian security controlled airfield unless they have an ASIC holder on board....

I see that Jandakot is on the list of controlled airports. My ASIC, which I've just renewed too, lives out of sight in my headset bag. I'm still waiting for someone to stop me when I walk out to one of the planes or into the maintenance hangar, but I don't think it's going to happen.

Be careful! They can and do fine people for not displaying an ASIC. I've seen it happen.

Indeed they do. You are supposed to wear it with a lanyard around your neck. ( to mix it with your headphone leads etc)'

the only good thing I found out using my ASIC card is a Sydney airport you get staff discount for food and drink, now that would be a lot of food and drink to make up the cost.

 

A short "thunk" is that why some well know fliers have been putting on weight lately????

I was off to go fly a mates decathalon a while back, arrive at YMMB and went into the main office to ask for airside access , I had my ASIC hanging from my neck ,a headset bag in one hand and a knee board in the other,,,,,,

 

Me ,I'd like airside access please( brandishing my ASIC for all to see)

So out I go up to the fence and notice a fella refuelling a 172, hey mate can you open the gate,,,,,,sure ! And I go flying ,,,a happy ending I would say, hence I figure my ASIC isn't worth the plastic it's printed on, and I will be staying away from anywhere that needs one, maybe!

The AFP can challenge anyone on the field, I've seen them escort people land side as they didn't have one. When I was working on the line in Adelaide, we were challenged EVERY night by AAL staff.

Have had it requested as ballina frequently as pilot but pinged me off as I often saw people dogs unattended kids vehicles airside thr side gate.

Got an ASIC instead then so that you can exercise the privileges of your licence?I only got an ASIC after they became required at Moorabbin a couple of years ago. AFP occasionally visit to check for terrorists otherwise I guess they are guarding railway stations and foot races. Until I got an ASIC I would use ERSA to check which airfields to avoid when flying cross-country.

That'd be right, Adelaide is well overstaffed with useless officials.... nothing much to do but ping people on trivialities in an attempt to justify their existence.

ERSA....

However, the basis on which they applied the need to have security control was I believe an airport which has RPT service it. If you have a look at Inverell for instance, ASIC required but alas... no RPT for a number of years. I questioned CASA on this about 2 years ago, am yet to get a reply.

That may explain the possible lack of interest at Jandakot, although we do have RFDS, Police Air Wing (hmm), Emergency Services, lots of flying schools, probably charters, and others, but no RPT. Still, maybe I'd better start wearing the thing. Prevention is cheaper than penalty, and I may get some discount coffee as well.

There are security designated airfields Unfortunately you get the local administration working out what procedures apply. So.. There is a lot of variability possible. A bit of authority goes to some people's heads. Nev

The security dipsh1t at YHBA was always over efficient in chasing down terrorists posing as pilots, the locals had a standard two word reply when he came sniffing around
