Guest Maj Millard Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 Check out the latest from the Redbull team......the Redbull P-38 Lightning (ex-White Lightning..Reno Air Races ) doing an air show in company with a Corsair, over a French airshow last month. Mesmerising stuff, and brilliant editing from at least 5 x GoPros mounted in-cockpit, and externally on both aircraft.......Says a lot for those GoPro mounts !!! Google.........Red bull at La ferte alias May 19 2013..................enjoy.......Maj...
Guest Maj Millard Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 That particular P-38 J was raced for many years at the Reno National Championship Air Races in the hands of ex-ww2 bomber pilot and later Texas ag-pilot Lefty Gardener, in the guise of "White Lightning"... When Lefty retired it from air racing his son flew a few air shows in it, and suffered a LH engine fire in it, on return to home base. He stuck it into a ploughed field successfully, but it suffered a fair bit of fire damage to the left wing. Redbull then purchased it, and I 'm sure have replaced ever nut and bolt since. The Corsair looks like the one that was rebuilt up in Darwin in French navy colours. The P-38 J model had the more streamlined lower engine cowls to the earlier model, and was one of the first military twins to have contra-rotating propellers , which makes life a lot easier if you happen to loose one of the Allison V-12s in action. I think it is the left engine that has a gearbox, for prop reversal, and the right engine doesn't. After racing at Reno Lefty had a team of bikini-clad girls who came out with squirt-bottles and toothbrushes!!, to clean the exhaust smudges from all the rivets on the tail booms. This took forever to do, but nobody was in a hurry !!!.................Maj...
Guest Maj Millard Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Steve Nz, Thanks for posting that....just a brilliant piece of footage and editing highlighting two classic aircraft. Makes one wonder just what those RB boys will bring us in the future !........Maj...
Owi Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Fantastic! I sat here in awe watching that whole thing through. Some pretty exciting manoeuvrings there. Thanks for sharing.
Guest steve-nz Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Looked like they were pretty close at times, would be exciting flying - very professional and skilled pilots.
Guest Maj Millard Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Don't know for sure, but RBull also have a jet aerobatic team. Maybe the same pilots, they seem to be flying at small jet speed. I saw that same P-38 do aerobatic routines at Reno with Lefty Gardiner flying...much slower and more gracefully . The Rbull driver seemed pretty comfortable in her. Just a brilliant display aircraft whoever is flying it !..............Maj......
Gforce Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 EPIC !! And that's there day job ! Love how at the bottom of one of the loops the Lead P-38 pilot cant help but smile... Thanks for posting that.
