Bubbleboy Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 I have a MA-3 10-4115-1 Carby off an O-200 that I want rebuilt for my Corvair. There is a very good workshop in the US of A who charges $650USD for a fully certified rebuild which I thought was not too bad. I emailed them today and have been quoted $200USD to post it back to me here! By the time I post it over and with the exchange rate im looking at around $1000AUD. I want to explore my options here first. Who rebuilds these carbs here and what have folk been paying for this service please? Do they rebuild your carb or do you swap your core for a rebuilt one? Scotty
Guest Maj Millard Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 BB, if you google 'aircraft carb rebuilds' the marvel Scherber website comes up, you may be able to source a rebuild kit..............Maj...
Bubbleboy Posted July 11, 2013 Author Posted July 11, 2013 Hi Maj...your right I could. I have all the manuals here for that model carb. I have rebuilt car and bike carbs but not one of these. Are there any tricks in them? Scotty
old man emu Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 Scotty, Wiltshire Engineering on Bankstown Airport are the people the company I worked for use. Very experienced, and the carby will come back with all ADs done. Don't expect to get out of this cheaply of the carby has some wear. Ring Bob Gray on 02 97904107. OME
Bubbleboy Posted July 12, 2013 Author Posted July 12, 2013 Thanks Mark...will look in to that! Scotty
ianrat Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Hi there Scotty. I sent my carby over to the states and then picked it up while at Oshkosh. This was about 4 years ago and at the time i think it cost me about $50.00 to send by Aus Post. They do a brilliant job on them. For $200.00 it looks like they are sending back Fedx. Ask if they will send back by USPS. that should only be about $50.00. I looked at a company at the airport on the sunny coast and he wanted $1000.00 to rebuild it including the kit. (no way) Hope you plane is coming along. Ianrat CH601 XL-B Brisbane
Bubbleboy Posted July 12, 2013 Author Posted July 12, 2013 Hiya Ian....thanks for that mate. I was blown away by that freight cost. Your right, USPS will be cheaper. My Pietenpol is coming along nicely. Are we going to see you guys at AUSFLY again this year? Scotty
ianrat Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 We are off to Oshkosh in two weeks. If the wife lets me go after Oshkosh we will be there. See ou there. Ianrat CH601 XL-B Brisbane
Bubbleboy Posted July 13, 2013 Author Posted July 13, 2013 Sounds great Ian. Have a ball, im jealous! I spoke with Roy in the USA yesterday. He has started my Corvair which is a bit exciting! Scotty
Guest Andys@coffs Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 Try www.shipito.com I've used them as freight forwarders to very good effect. Often a quote of $300USD gets converted to less than $100USD if you use them. What happens when you sign up with them is that you in effect get a USA based address, and a lot of the time freight internal within the USA is a pittance when compared to Australia. You then can choose how you want the goods reshipped to Australia by interacting with them via an online portal. I find Toll as a provider they offer, generally are the cheapest for anything of any bulk. I used them to ship a Pioneer home amplifier. Sold in AU for >$3k, but was available in the USA for $800. using any of the FedEx/similar provided freight charges well in excess of $500USD (they are heavy due class A amplifier and really big transformer) Using Toll I think the cost from memory was $150USD....... They have 3 or 4 different locations in the USA that you can ship to (from the same customer account) so you can reduce your internal USA freight costs as well.. You are updated by email every time an event occurs, such as delivery to them, payments by you made, shipment dispatched internationally etc. I've used them about 4 times now never an issue. If you choose a better (more expensive membership) they will consolidate lots of smaller parcels into a single bigger one, by discarding packaging and repacking. They photograph it all so you can see what is occurring. That significantly reduces freight charges further Andy
Bubbleboy Posted July 13, 2013 Author Posted July 13, 2013 Thanks Andy...that sounds like a great option. Its amazing how bringing things over from the UK or Hong Kong is so much cheaper than the US. No idea why. Thanks mate Scotty
Yenn Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 There is no guarantee of arrival wuth USPS. You can't even claim back the postal cost. I lost several hundred dollars worth that way.
