flying dog Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 I read a small article in the paper on Wednesday. Wow! Sorry I don't have more details. He is a pilot from Merimbula - if I remember correctly - and he is flying "around the world in 70 days". Or something like that. It showed his route/track from Oz to America via all the small islands. 7 hours flying over water! Yikes! 1
frank marriott Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 Cirrus with auto pilot and GPSs and unbelievable communications equipment , speed - more about endurance to my way of looking at it. The early pilots with very limited panel, poor maps, no nav aids, poor facilities are the ones that still amaze me.
Ultralights Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 its a commendable effort, but as said, he is doing it at 170 kts, at flight levels, with autopilot and the latest GPS equipment. his longest leg just finished, 14 hrs from Hilo to LA. i think he is going for the record of youngest and fastest around the world. hope he gets it, at least he is putting GA back on the map in Oz. 1

There's another thread on this already http://www.recreationalflying.com/threads/around-the-world-flight.64428/ Also with 14.7 h endurance in the plane and the longest leg being about 14 h over ocean, I'd say he's pushing it a bit. 3

The legal minimum reserve is 0.5 hours so he isn't breaking any rules, as far as I can see, but there is very little room for error.
Jabiru7252 Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 Anybody flying aleg of that duration would be mad to rely on 30 minutes reserve. Over 14 hours, 30 minutes could be lost to even a slight wind change. 1
