August 30, 2013 | Mark Clayton

As suggested by the membership the board wish to compile a skills register. We invite all individuals and businesses that have skills or services that could assist the RA-Aus or its members, and are prepared to offer those skills/services to voluntarily register (using this Skills Registration form. If you cannot view the document or need it in another format please e-mail and we will send it to you in various formats. If you have any questions direct them to myself (mobile 0403 228986).

Regards and Safe Flying

So what I'm seeing here is a complete turn- around from a previously held opinion by many on this forum, and some members of the current Raa board, that we don't need the old experienced people involved, but instead inexperienced 'new blood'.............So now the older experienced skills and judgement are needed ??...........please explain !....ya can't have your cake and eat it too folks!...Hang in there Middo ...there might be hope yet !

I have said all along that that the long- term members ( older ?) with history and experience in our sport, are just the ones we need for their skills and judgement, borne from years of exposure and activity within or sport.

A 'skills' register is a great idea and overdue, and I will certainly contribute to it, and encourage others to do so. Now lets see.............saw my first UL flown in 1977 (Winton Grasshopper in the hills behind Sydney's western suburbs) been flying them since 1984, that's 29 years of active continous exposure folks. Does that qualify as a 'skill' , to be able to see when the sport is not headed in the right direction ???????.............Don't tell me someone has finally realised the the old blokes might actually know something after all !!!......no surly that couldn't be.........Maj...087_sorry.gif.8f9ce404ad3aa941b2729edb25b7c714.gif 024_cool.gif.7a88a3168ebd868f5549631161e2b369.gif

Major

This action by the current board is a result of a long outstanding voted action at the previous Feb 9th GM ......We have, for example, said why pay for professional advice when it is entirely likely that within the membership that advice is probably freely available..... It has nothing to do with the board per se, or those on it currently or historically and nothing to do with who might or might not get voted in or out in the future....

As an example, im sure there is heaps of IT capability within the membership, Im in that field and know of literally a dozen or more in the same area that are members...why would you then pay for advice outside the field where that advice giver is chosen by people who might only in passing recognize a keyboard from a typewriter....when the ability to give the advice, or at worst choose the advice giver is available for free.....

SO complete turn around??????WTF its exactly what we asked for that the previous bunch gave lip service to, but did nothing to implement! "....Hang in there Middo ...there might be hope yet !" NOT if I have any say!!! Its my opinion that his Time of contributing or UNILATERALLY causing! the decline is up!!!

We don't need to resurrect Middo. We have seen what he tried with proxies but apart from that, situations change. We are moving into a new arena and we should do that very carefully indeed or the game won't be worth being in. Nev

Ooooh....bit touchy there Andy ?...and there's no need to shout, that's bad manners.

I've already said I'd be happy to support the initiative ....................And wether you support Middo or not is a matter of personal respect or preference..The fact that he garnished so many proxies recently in a short time, shows that unlike you, there are many out there who do................Maj....024_cool.gif.7a88a3168ebd868f5549631161e2b369.gif

................ interesting

andy and maj - if I could be so bold as to say i reckon you are both 1 all - that's a draw .............. the australian cricket team would be happy with that

what skills are the board specifically looking for - is there that many ? I can see IT being one ............... but if I was a qualified gardener surely I'm not going to canberra to mow the lawns

Andy - was there a discussion about what specific skills were to be attracted / required ?

It wasn't so much that we were looking for skills now (excepting IT) but rather instead of paying professional consulting rates for anything (Accounting, Legal, General business skills, HR expertise, procurement, insurance, engineering, facilities management, aviation medicine, psychology, technical audit....as a subset of examples) in the future we first look to see if we can get the skills we need from the membership rather than paying for it.... Of course there are issues such as recourse for what might turn out to be poor advice, an over simplification might be that there is none if you paid $0 for it.... but then again anyone who has paid $$$ for these skills in real life knows you don't necessarily get great returns everytime no matter how careful you are with selection......in otherwords its not a zero rework reality.

If you own a septic tank pump out operation then its not immediately obvious how that would translate.....but if your one of the others I mentioned then put your name forward.....you can then have an opportunity to contribute to the outcome rather than just watch from the sidelines wondering what idiot dreamt up that approach!!

If you had a process where anyone was invited to contribute a view on any matter it would help. CASA have that facility. (Submissions on certain matters, which I and others, have done in the past). Plenty of things would benefit from input from the "masses". I don't think it is a matter of turning up in Canberra and sharpening pencils etc where you might be just in the way. Specific rather than general suggestion box sort of things. ie training , maintenance, formation of policy and so forth. nev

And he also had access to our email database and our mail-out resources, that might have been a signicantly contributing factor also! (spoken quietly and gently so as not to offend anybodies sensitive ears).

I must get a pair of those new fangled hearing aids and I will be able to hear loud noises too.

Is it skills that are wanted, or qualifications?

As an example, I was trained by the US Air Force as an avionics technician, but I don't have current certifications for that. I also worked for NASA as a computer techician, but don't have any certification for that either. So are those "skills" useful or are you looking for "certified" advice.

Why not fill in the form accurately so it reflects what you are prepared to do. As I said before skills aren't generally needed right at this moment but the membership felt that having access to list of potential skills in the membership may well be advantageous to us in the future.

Filling in the form and laying out what you will and wont do is the first step. I said, in my case, here are my skills, I'm prepared to support from afar, if needed in Canberra then I would expect travel and accommodation to be covered.....
