Tomo Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Can't help but see how well Doug executed this forced landing - a big well done from me and I'll fly with you any day. His student was his utmost priority as you can see and it was nice just to see how calm and well he undertook what is a pretty scary situation. Doug and I were getting our GA licenses at the same time from what I recall. http://www.recreationalflying.com/threads/young-pilots-praised-for-textbook-crash-landing-at-victoria-point-abc-local.65909/ 2 3
JimG Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Looked extremely well judged and executed , cool head and excellent flying , well done Doug...! JimG
Head in the clouds Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Exceptional. Very cool-headed, well judged. I particularly liked his complete disregard for the ASI (which is how it should be if you know your aircraft) and his concern for the student/pax. Also his quick attention to the Master after coming to a stop. If everyone practiced as much as he obviously has there'd be a lot less about us in the news. 1
Kyle Communications Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Outstanding job. I doubt whether I would have been as calm and collected as Doug in the same situation. Would have loved to have had audio on that film clip. Mark
Ballpoint 246niner Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 We may have to call them "paddockfinder" aviation - 2 in one month. Great job dougie- looked so cool the student may have as well thought it was just practice! Finally some good positive coverage by the media on channel 10 tonight Yes/ agree to all the above comments .
fly_tornado Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 no such thing as bad press for jabiru 1
Mick Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 That is impressive. I can only hope that when that happens to me I can remain that cool, calm & collected.

fly_tornado Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 no this is footage from august 20 crash
Ballpoint 246niner Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Pathfinder aviation have had 2 in one month? A J230 and the 170, both ef's one at Vic pt and Doug's one at Parkinson's- I may stand corrected but belief they were both from YBAF where Pathfinder are based.
Jabiru7252 Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 What was the other crash? Crash? Forced landing is hardly called a crash. Did he turn the fuel tap off before landing? Make sure all is off when your done with the flaps and radio call etc. At 22 years old he would hardly be called a seasoned pilot but he acted like one.
Spriteah Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 A great job. He really loved to keep his hand on throttle. I think I would to. And at landing look how tense left hand is. I take it as the prop not windmilling he had no desire to try and restart.

I was referring to the Parkinson "forced landing"
Jabiru7252 Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 If the prop IS turning do not try a restart. Jab manual. Parkinson forced landing, yes, silly me.
eightyknots Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 A fantastic job Doug. Does anyone know what kind of engine was under the cowling and what the problem was that caused the prop to stop? (motor seizing?)
Jabiru7252 Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 A fantastic job Doug.Does anyone know what kind of engine was under the cowling and what the problem was that caused the prop to stop? (motor seizing?) It looks like a standard J170D airplane so I would guess the engine was a 2200cc 80HP standard jab engine.
Guest nunans Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Great job indeed, well done, he even managed to keep the nose gear from breaking, a sign of a well executed forced landing.
nathan_c Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 I was under the impresson that the J230 at parkinson was not Pathfinders.... unless they have changed j230's again since I flew there last as the registrations were different.... 1
Admin Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 The video is making the news world wide...here is one from Belfast: http://www.recreationalflying.com/threads/video-cockpit-footage-captures-moment-light-plane-loses-power-belfast-telegraph.65977/ one from England: http://www.recreationalflying.com/threads/watch-amazing-moment-young-pilots-perform-textbook-crash-landing-after-plane.65963/
fly_tornado Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 The phone will be ringing off the hook @ Jabiru for the next few weeks:oh yeah:
ayavner Posted September 4, 2013 Posted September 4, 2013 seriously... why do they persist on calling it a "crash" landing... sounds more dramatic? 2
