Big Kev Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Guys, Been meaning to get to asking about this for a while. The N3 appears to have been built around the half vw in its various guises. However I'm pretty sure I've seen them with Rotax 447 and 503. Could a 503 and 3 blade be fitted in place of the half vw? It would be a 10 reg. Cheers Big Kev

billwoodmason Posted September 10, 2013 Posted September 10, 2013 What about a 1600 jab motor - ample power (60hp), and sounds like a real aircraft engine. Weight would be similar to 503 rotax etc. There is a niche market for these older engines in single seat 95.10 reg. aircraft. 1

Ideally I'd fit a 1600 vw but that's twice the weight and would definitely upset the balance........ I guess my question is, with all the other interesting licencing stuff that has gone on recently, would it be legal? I fit in OK despite being 198cm, but it would be always operating very near mtow, so I was after some spare thrust.

Guest Mark_hwltt Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 The for runner to the N3 - the J3 kitten had a 502 but was under powered so the N3 was powered with the Global then the Mosler - hard to beat the Mosler for economy , spares . No Spares for the J1600. I went thru the exercise of different engines with my N3, but decided in the end the Mosler was a good fit. About the only thing I would like to do would be the upgrade from Hummel Engines ( longer throw crankshaft, bigger piston's and Cyl's) some machining of the cases would be involved.

Would be a good idea to keep under the manufacturers MTOW, but check up to see if the is a structural MTOW, or just a legal MTOW for the US? J3 kitten had a 502 The J3 Kitten was originally designed for the 277 under FAR 103, but could take up to a 503 (or equivalent) if registered (in the US). Remember, the Mosler 4 cylinder version of what is really a VW, only put out about 50hp (bit less than a 503) The Mosler 2 cylinder was lucky to put out 30hp, and was heavier than a 503. Some people are just afraid of two strokes, and want to believe they can get power from a four stroke...... sad.

Big Kev Posted September 18, 2013 Author Posted September 18, 2013 As an Engo I can see both sides of 2 and 4 stroke argument. With the N3 I'd be after the best power/ weight ratio I could get. Ideally, I'd go for more torque and lower revs of a standard 1600 VW, but sticking 160lb on the poor mite would kill it. A big block Mosler (94mm x 86mm) would do the job admirably, I'd imagine, but I'm a wendy as far as hand cranking goes, so there is weight to be added.
