Is there, or does anybody know of, anyone scratch building an all metal plane in or around Adelaide?

Would really like to look at a project in progress.

Regards Keith.

Keep whacking them with a rubber mallet.

I'm building a 701 in Hobart, but I found the HomeBuiltHelp "Metalworking 101" DVD was very useful in giving me the confidence to get started. (This series is aimed at 701 builders but the concepts would translate to other aircraft, and they have other DVD series that may be more suitable to you).

If I can help with any questions feel free to PM.

Cheers, Marty

Thanks for the feed back, I do have the dvd's and have found them to been very helpful. Watching the dvd's has given me the confidence to tackle a scratch build project. I just need a bit of guidance to get me started...

Just so you know, the first piece i attempted was the vertical tail spar. made a template from mdf, cut a piece of 6061 to size, clamped done to bench used rubber mallet bent up the sides 90o all look good, nice clean bend no ripples it the sides, i was very happy.... Thought to my self this is too easy....

Then i removed the clamps. it curled up like a banana... about 3" gap under the middle when flat.

So thanks for the offer guys i send some PM after...

Try working the whole length gradually to the correct angle. If you fold some bits over more than others, like bend one section to 90deg while leaving the rest straight, it stretches the edge. This will cause it to buckle as it is.

Thanks, this is the sort of feed back I need, cause i wasn't sure whether to keep working it or start again, now i understand where it's gone wrong.

I'll try again, a little more control and take it slowly....

Thanks Regards Keith

To make edges that are curved, you can either scallop out sections, or make small flutes ( a bit like a pie dish) to take up the extra material along the edge.

So had another go at the vertical spar, this time gradually bent up the sides little at a time... Once again it looked good, crossed my fingers, pope.gif.f606ef85899745c40c103dff0622d758.gif , removed the clamps, And.......

Turned out perfect... 011_clap.gif.c796ec930025ef6b94efb6b089d30b16.gif

So made a few more pieces, the rudder skeleton is all ready to rivet, just waiting for the cortec to arrive..

Next Job, cut out the skin..
