Does anyone know the airfield, the runway direction and who owns it? I want to see if it is open, I can use it etc. Cheers Ryan

Bandit12 Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 It's been a long time, but it wasn't too bad in a Warrior and C172. Watch your wind carefully, you will likely end up needing to land into wind, and take off downhill, regardless of wind direction. Not sure the Sportstar is rugged enough, but the Foxbat should be fine. Typical soft field take off techniques. 1
rdarby Posted October 2, 2013 Author Posted October 2, 2013 Thanks Bandit. Definitely taking the Foxbat! Maybe I am reading between the lines too much, but is this a bad strip to be avoided? I don't want to break anything. I may just go to Kingaroy to the café there instead!
av8vfr Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 I don't think it is a bad strip, as far as grass strips go... I have flown a Texan in there no worries.. Have a chat to Neil at Gofly as he used to fly out of there a bit.
Bandit12 Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 I wouldn't just avoid it. Read up, plan to overfly and inspect like a private strip, and if you don't feel right, divert to Kingaroy. It really wasn't a bad strip, just the first time I ever needed near full throttle to taxi up hill

I was hoping for breakfast! It's forecast to be a decent day and I want to make the most of it! I hope the wind dies down, I nearly got blown off the road just driving to work!

It's where the race track is. I didn't much care for the strip, it's fairly bumpy. It felt to me like they ran the horses over it, but I doubt that's right. When I took off, I went uphill and that was a bit exciting as the terrain rises. Not too sure of the details of ownership etc. We (instructor) and I just landed there and then took off.
Ballpoint 246niner Posted October 6, 2013 Posted October 6, 2013 Ryan , I took Scott (above)in their on a navex and know the strip well, the rising terrain and density alt can be a little tricky on a hot day.No issues it's a council strip with a couple of great locals who operate there as well. park up the southern end if your are there for a while. It saved my butt the day the dragon went in in bad weather when we diverted. As everyone says do your prec search and no worries there if not a little rough at either end. Foxbat will be fine.

The strip looks good from the air, but it was blowing hard across the runway so we went to Kingaroy instead. Very nice airport there. It reached 37deg when we got back to Caboolture. Climbing and just maintaining altitude took quite a lot of extra revs in the circuit!

Speaking of the 'roy, the ongoing political influence that exists out there is easy to spot. The runway was recently resurfaced and I would have judged that it was a looooong way off needing that.
Bandit12 Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Scuttlebutt has it that Kingatropolis (sorry, I'm a Murgon boy and old rivalry hangs around) is being considered for an RAAF base if Amberley turns out to be not viable in years to come. But scuttlebutt is always worth what you paid for it, and maybe Joh's family really do have that kind of pull still

I thought I would resurrect this old thread as the South Burnett Council has re-opened the Nanango aerodrome after being "officially" closed since November 2016, mainly because one owner of a property adjoining the airfield refused to let the council onto her property to cut/remove some offending trees. All the Council have done is do what I, and probably others, told them to do 2 years ago - just shorten the runway a little if clearing the trees at either end is too hard. No worries; but why they installed the light poles is anyone's guess.

They passed a law making it illegal to intrude or allow intrusion into the splay. Big fine for non-compliance. kaz 1
