Here's a personal anecdote, when I was coming back to Perth from Hong Kong (I used to live there), there was a bunch of school kids from England on our flight, they were okay passengers, but a bit loud etc.

 

Anyway, as we are during the descent into Perth, the phone of the girl sitting next to me went off.

 

She had left her phone on the whole time, and when it got reception in Australia, she received a nice "Welcome to Australia" message. So much for mobiles causing planes to crash :P

 

/As a side not, what's the deal with that, do mobiles really interfere with modern planes? Or is it just to stop people from talking loudly on the phone?

Im pretty sure....

 

You know when your listening to the radio in the car and you send of a text or are receiving a call etc.. that sound tuka tuka thingo :biggrin:.

 

Yeah well that tuka tuka, i think, the pilots hear through there headsets,i think thats why they dont want them on... :biggrin:

The boys on mythbusters did a segment on this. They tryed to rig up a panel made from bits collected from an aircraft graveyard and aviation second hand stores. Couldn't get the nav equipment to work so they "borrowed" a small jet. Citation or similar. As you would expect (federal laws), they couldn't test in the air. But they tested various models of phones with the equipment running. No effect. They also had this device that amplified the signal like a thousand times or something. Still no effect.

 

The official response from FAA was that if they allowed mobiles in aircraft, they would have to properly test every model ever released to ensure the safety of passengers. Easier and cheaper just to say 'sorry but no'
