In the latest edition of the Sport Pilot magazine there is an article on the new release Rotax912iS . I noted that there are two designations of the new motor , the 912iS and 912iSc , the 912iSc being described as a certified engine . It has me wondering , what are the physical differences between the two engines ? .. Also does Jabiru produce a certified engine as there are more than a few GA reg'd Jabs flying around ? ...

Probably just a component paper trail.Eg- the crank, etc have their own paper trail IE- maintenance history.Like a Certified lycoming and continental .Quality of the components would be the same.

Jabiru don't have a certified version of their engines.

As I understand it, the 4 cylinder WAS originally certified (but currently isn't) and the 6 cylinder never was.

Nor do they need to be as the aircraft are all LSA now.

From all accounts, there is no physical difference at all between the 912S and 912ULS; same components, same quality control. Only difference is a) a paper trail that says it is certified and b) a higher price tag, presumably so that only the ones who want a certified engine pay for the cost of the certification process as well as possibly higher insurance.

I have no doubt the iS vs. iSC will be the same.

Heard another interesting fact (rumour?) that the production cost (parts and labour) of a 912S is about $4500. A similar amount goes to insurance!
