Lithium Ion Batteries

Got to see some new Super Start Batteries (L/ion) yesterday mostly for motorcycle use but also cars. The weight of these is unbelievable.

Rated for a 10 year life & designed for starting engines & charge on conventional battery chargers/alternators.

The 320 CCA battery was about a quarter the size of the Concorde RG25 I use in the Zephyr & weighed around 1.2kg whereas the Concorde has only 225 CCA & weighs 10.3kg.

Yes it is a bit dearer than the Concorde but not a great deal in the overall scheme of things.

Just wonder how great the fire risk is? Is anyone using /prepared to try them in an ultralight? Are there any regulations precluding using them in ultralight aircraft?

Just putting it out there for a discussion topic.

My KTM motorbike is still on its original Battery. It was first registered in May 2004. I got Battery world to test it as I have to charge it if not ridden after approx 4 weeks. They said it is abot half life.:) It's a japanese YUSA brand.

Yeah Daz some batteries do last well. When I replaced the Concorde RG25 in the Zephyr last year it was 8 years old. It had spent its initial life in the Gazelle including a few hours upside down! Then it sat around for 6 months until I put it in the Zephyr. That's one reason I spent $370 on another one.
