fly_tornado Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 Fail fail fail http://edition.cnn.com/2013/11/21/travel/kansas-cargo-plane-wrong-airport/index.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+rss%2Fcnn_us+%28RSS%3A+U.S.%29 1 1
dazza 38 Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 I dunno ,I'm sure they will work something out. For starters, take off with absolute minimum fuel and no cargo to get to the closest useable field . 1
kgwilson Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 Red faces all round. Looks like a fotal tuckup.
Ultralights Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 no dramas, remove cargo, and just enough fuel to get the 12 miles to the intended destination, should get off in 6000ft easily, even wait for a day with decent headwinds if need be.
fly_tornado Posted November 21, 2013 Author Posted November 21, 2013 just like flying a jab eh! both hands on the brakes if they need to abort?
Phil Perry Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 I'm sure Bruce Willis or Charlton Heston could have sorted that little problem out without difficulty,. . . .why make a drama aout of a crisis ? ? ? ?
keith.b Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 no dramas, remove cargo, and just enough fuel to get the 12 miles to the intended destination, should get off in 6000ft easily, even wait for a day with decent headwinds if need be. Add a few booster rockets ........
Zibi Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 Looks like it managed to get out without booster rockets: https://www.recreationalflying.com/xf2/index.php?app=core&module=system&controller=embed&url=https://twitter.com/KWCH12/statuses/403431348116811776 http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-11-22/giant-cargo-plane-in-unexpected-stopover-at-tiny-us-airport/5109806
facthunter Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 Their nicknames will be different after that episode. I would wonder at the pavement load capacity, and they obviously had no turning node capable of taking it's size. It's not the first or the last time that will happen. Nev
derekliston Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 Last time I remember hearing of something like that, I was a kid at the time and I think it was a Super Connie approaching Heathrow and talking to control, landed at Northolt and same thing, told tower they were down and tower said not here you're not!
fly_tornado Posted November 22, 2013 Author Posted November 22, 2013 lat time it was a C-5 Galaxy(? not sure) big grey 4 jet military transporter
M61A1 Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 Having worked for Boeing, I'm pretty sure that "elaborate planning to make sure no-one gets hurt" means, stop everything, and move everyone for miles around, and tick some boxes on a sheet that makes someone else responsible. Oh, and fill out an environmental impact form to compensate for any small critters you might upset.
M61A1 Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 The problem removing the cargo may well be getting it those last 12 miles across town, one of them fuselages isn't small.
facthunter Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 Some cargo mob ran the outfit. I can't see that it was Boeings fault, directly. Unless they took the lowest bidder and didn't check it all out I can't see how the pavement would take the weight on that runway. You have to check out all the bays and taxiways for load carrying capability If you don't go there regularly you will muck it up someway if you don't do the planning. Can't blame the language like you might in other places. Nev
eightyknots Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 "Onlookers and gawkers have caused accidents," said Roger Xanders, chief of airport police and fire. I wonder how?
