It's not PNG - it's West Papua - the Indonesian side. There are plenty of hairy strips on both sides of the border though. Mission strips are/have been, the most difficult because they didn't have to meet Government specs - just what it was physically possible to do. A gentle rub on the clerical collar was part of the checklist for many of them. The accident rate has improved in PNG, but these days, when they do have a fatal - it's with a Twotter or PAC 700 which is carrying far more people than was possible in C185's and C206's 40 years ago. The weather hasn't changed, and the valleys haven't become wider - so if you misjudge your turning circle, or decision height - a lot more people die with you.
