Got to go for a flight today & it felt good, first time since 20FEB20, just a quick 30 min bog lap around the island for an a/c reactivation flight, only a/c in the airspace, it’s sad as Caboolture has more movements than most international airports.

Had a short run from Somerton to Baraba ...

Hello CB, nice to hear Barraba is still getting used. We hear that Tamworth tower is now closed at weekends, so some of us are threatening to fly in on a Saturday. Need to get a proper briefing before we invade.

Coffs Tower has been closed on Weekends for a month or so now so there is no CTR now between the Gold Coast & Williamtown.

I know a couple of people who would be happy about that...

Had a nice fly up the Kangarooby valley today with low cloud on the hills. later the sun came out, mother nature agrees thrusters are gold.

Had nice conditions over the weekend for an overnighter to Donnington Airfield (West of Townsville) where Christian planned a photo shoot of visiting aircraft with the milky way in the background. (Keen to see how they turned out.) A six pack group arrived from destinations like Palmyra Mackay, Heathrow Lethebrook, Longreach and Mareeba and others call in by car from Townsville and others flew in for the breakfast. Clear skies up there and there was light rain when I got back to Palmyra at midday Sunday. All in all a nice trip and the night was not too cold at about 3 degrees.

Christian has another weekend planned now in September when I see the dates I'll post the info.

Well hell of a good days flying today, West Sale to Lang Lang then around Western Port to Phillip Island, lap around the Island and a few around the race track then off to Wilson’s Promontory via Wonthaggi and Sandy point, from the bottom of the Prom to Yarram Airport for a coffee and a restroom stop.

Left Yarram and tracked to the coast via McLaughlins beach then 1500ft all the way to Lakes Entrance, couple of laps around Lakes then off to Pilgrim International at Bruthen.

Voice mail from my sister saying they were at Lakes had me heading back for a couple of passes past Kalimna pub and a wave to the 2 sisters and Ma & Pa having their fish and chips on a bench outside the pub.

Back to West Sale via home to top off 4.5 hours and about 780kms for the day with all the detours taken, burnt about 68 litres of BP premium 95 unleaded in the process with an average fuel burn of around 15.2 lph.

Never tire of my passion for aviation.

You must have used up all the film in yr camera with that marathon trip? I've only done short trips over the last few weeks, too cold after a while although today was a little warmer but bumpy.

Great shots, Mr. Jessup. I try not to read the location before I look at the shots and thought it was Lakes Entrance... Hasn't changed much from the air. All very green given it was burned out not too long ago. The south east coast and around up tpo Bermagui (as far as I have been in a light aircraft frrom Moorabbin along that route) is almost gods country...

Flightrite,

No plenty more photos from the iPhone were taken, just cannot work out why they doubled up as in the preview it was just one of each

"Tell us about your last flight:"

Yesterday morning we had the most peaceful flying experience imaginable.

For a many-times postponed reunion, some of my siblings gathered in Tenterfield. Saturday brunch at Rosenhof, a German restaurant, was a great meal prepared for us by the happy team led by Christian and his lovely wife Kirsten.

Washed down with German beer and some much stronger stuff, how could life get any better? When we discovered that Christian is a Balloon pilot (and also flies proper aeroplanes)!

So, next morning (yesterday) before sunup he took us out into the countryside and assembled the balloon- just across the paddock from the old house in which "Waltzing Matilda" is said to have been composed. (Banjo Patterson spent quite some time there and even got married in Tenterfield).

image.thumb.jpeg.ae145f427cecda65b1efcfe228d43e51.jpeg

We climbed in, a few loud bursts of the gas burners and off we lifted, floating like magic across the paddock, gently clearing some trees and watched a stunning dawn over the foggy landscape.

image.thumb.jpeg.395fe35681b57f149e27fdae5690b955.jpeg

Among many fascinating sights, we passed the ruined home of the solicitor who defended Breaker Morant.

This was not my first balloon flight, but it was the best. Drifting silently over the sleeping countryside in the warm inversion layer, we felt no breeze as we surveyed the whole district north to distant peaks near our old home of Old Koreelah.

After we passed over the town (at considerable height to avoid disturbing dogs, horses and Sunday-morning sleep-ins) we descended over open fields.

The pilot's minimal instrumentation includes a monitor for the gas temperature in the top of the envelope. It gets mobs hotter than I expected. 83C when cruising, but it can exceed 100.

I was surprised at the degree of directional control, as the pilot changed altitude to ride different air currents. It was the sort of flying I'd always wanted to do; we slowly skimmed the ground riding the cold air that gently slides down gullies, hitting the burners to lift up over fences, trees and power lines.

image.thumb.jpeg.e6d9f7a7b63d19359c04f75e45afb501.jpeg

After selecting a suitable paddock, he put us down with a minimum of fuss.

In about half an hour we had the entire balloon packed onto the ground support vehicle and were on our way to a great German breakfast.

Departed Hong Kong this morning for Darwin, a quick tech stop then off to Alice, first time since 1999 that I’ve operated an airliner in Australia, full of mixed emotions, excited to fly here but upset because of the reason, looks like Alice will become the largest airline storage facility in the southern hemisphere
