Had a very nice flight with my new friend SkyEcho2, the country looks amazing and Wyangala dam is filling up for summer. Just got the plane in the hangar before a low double pass by two C130's, another perfect day in paradise.

This morning I got an early start to fly around our valley.

Doing the preflight with my frozen fingers was not fun, but opening doors and dragging out the aeroplane warmed me up a bit.

With no traffic about, I was able to warm up the engine gradually by doing a fast taxi-skim down the 1700m strip, which smoothed out the CHT readings nicely. Then, with tanks only half full and first stage of flap, she climbed rapidly into the cold, dense morning air.

 

After recent rain, the country looks as good as it ever has.

In the almost still conditions, my recently-improved compass closely matched both Track and Heading in OzRunways. Burning 10 lph at 2650, she cruised at 90kt thru silky smooth air, mostly hands-free.

 

After years of mucking about with phone adapters, I followed a suggestion made recently on this forum and simply put the phone on loudspeaker and poked the end under my headset. Worked a treat!

Was able to call ahead to talk with club members, who gave valuable feedback about my strobes and wig-wags.

 

Heading across the Upper Mooki valley towards the Liverpool Range, over Willow Tree, traversed some rugged ridges east of Wallabadah and back out over the plains to the airport.

Had a great weekend flying 3 axis and gyro out around the Far West of NSW. The picture below looking towards the Barrrier ranges looking East.

Just back from a great flight to Donnington Airfiled to partake in celebrating 50 years since the first two passengers landed at the strip. They reinacted that landing with Brice on the Grumman Tiger from Ayr and they were met by Christian. Only a few aircraft flew in maybe due to the wx. Our flight was 2.4 from Palmyra taking the long scenic coastal route and landing at Bowen on the way. 2.7 hours return and landed at Lakeside Airpark to put in 20 liters of just in case fuel (Thanks Phil) as the head wind was 20 /22 kts and higher was 28kts so not welcomed. Plenty of places to get a fuel top up. The local WW2 collectors and vehicle clubs were there. All in all another great flyaway. Should be more and should have more time to attend. Now back to fun of an oil, filter, hoses (5yrly due next month so will do the oil hose now) then the annual before another flyaway. Thanks go to Christian and his family for the invite and getting things ready as the airstrip, facilities and food was top notch. Cheers.

Finished the annual and engine service Wednesday and flew this afternoon. No prize for knowing the wind direction. Burning off the sugar cane trash. Back just before sundown. Nice conditions. All good and ready for the months ahead and next trip.

Broken Hill made the news yesterday for the flooding in the far west of NSW. 20mm in 15 minutes at the airport, more in other areas, so I went for a fly to check out the local vistas. Photo below is Stephens Creek (known as a gum creek as it it is the only place you find gum trees out here) North of the Tibooburra Road. The pic below is the Stephens Creek reservoir, which is the termination of the Menindee - Broken Hill water pipeline (100km long) which was replaced last year by the Wentworth - Broken Hill water pipeline (260km long),anyway probably only of interest to those who know the area. Interestingly I saw a few small groups of wild budgerigars today. Budgies do not normally live around here so I am wondering if they got pushed across with the weather from further West.

Been at it all week cruising around, went for a run today out behind the wind farm at Silverton, 30kts from the north and rough over the range even in the gyro. Some very pretty mares tail cirrus in the skies in Far West NSW today. I cut and pastedan explanation below from the BBC website which explains them - 

 

"These are a type of cirrus cloud, known as cirrus uncinus. The name is derived from Latin and means "curly hooks". The clouds occur at very high altitudes, at a temperature of about −50 to −40C. They are commonly known as mares' tails because of their likeness to horse tails. An old weather proverb goes, "Mares' tails and mackerel scales make lofty ships to carry low sails." Together, cirrus uncinus clouds and patchy altocumulus clouds often mean that rain is on its way.

 

Our forecast is for 3 - 6mm of rain tomorrow, currently temps in the mid 30s (celsius) and down to 15 tomorrow.

Never posted here before...But took a spin over the mighty Finnis wetlands just as the first showers fall. Its lookin pretty dry but in a few months this river will be hundreds of metres wide at the mouth...

 

This is not Tiger country...The crocs have eaten all the tigers...

Massive thanks today to @wideblueyonder who took me up - not once, but twice - in a Sav from his Midlands Flying School strip at Tunbridge!

It was great to fly with the eagles (as long as they kept their distance) - fantastic morning for it.

 

Thanks also for lending me the cowling moulds for the 701 - I stopped in at the Fibreglass Shop in Hobart on the way home and got some advice.

Flew out to Lake Mungo lodge for a short break with daughter.  Interesting place. Good to see some recreational cirrus braving the dirt.

Well I’m lucky to still have a flying job but I’ve just completed a flight I’ll never forget, it started in Hamburg at the Airbus factory to test fly & deliver an A321NEO, with a crew of 3, that’s 2 pilots & a riding engineer we set off to Dubai for an overnight stop, next day to Hong Kong, flight itself was very enjoyable.

 

After a compulsory 24 hours quarantine waiting for COVID test results we found out that the engineer tested positive, so instead of heading home & then Toulouse on Friday for the next a/c we find ourselves locked up in a government quarantine camp for 14 days, the hardest part is the food is 🤢🤮.

Sorry to hear about the quarantine, but it'd be an experience having only 3 people in a brand new A321.

Do you have to compensate for the missing weight of pax + luggage at all, or just fly empty?  Guessing handling would be a bit different?

She flys well empty, no ballast required, but yes a later flare required that’s about it, stunning a/c, but I rather be flying my Foxbat.

Canola harvest done, trim the strip edges,  the RV is coming home.

Fitted in an early morning flight for just over the hour out to the coast for a look around.  Landed back by 0730 hrs and off to work.  The air was nice and just a light 10 knot cross wind for the landing. Marian is the sugar mill steam and Cape Hillsborough just north of Mackay is the headland  and Mt Blackwood has the tower on its top.

A quick trip to Goolwa to ferry a Foxbat back to cowra. Overnight at Swan Hill. The RV's nostalgic 5.9l engine used only 10% more fuel flying in company with the bat at 80kias. Luckily we had a nice tail wind all the way back

Recently we moved our plane from Watts Bridge to Heck field at Jacobs Well. YHEC is very close to the Gold Coast, but more important, closer to where we live.

The other day, we had some really good weather and lighting conditions and a new GoPro to test out so we did a fly over the Gold Coast

Pretty impressive video production there, Scott. I can’t compete with that, given my  dirty canopy, crappy camera work and a the random bit of stuff in the lens. 
 

Yesterday morning I got an early start to beat the heatwave turbulence.

Up at 5, in the air by 6:30. Where to today? Let’s follow the Mooki River south across the Liverpool Plains, all the way to its source. It might not look like the Amazon, but the Mooki is a proper River and at the moment even has water in it!

 

  The pointy one I didn’t climb above is East Bluff (4072’)

 

Then fly west past Pidgeon Box Rock to the headwaters of the Omaleah and trace it down into the Plains. 
Beautiful clear morning, but pretty bumpy near the Range, as mechanical turbulence from the northerly airstream passes over the foothills.

 

Plane in hangar by 8, wizzed grass along the fence lines, then home by 9, before the heatwave really hits.
