alf jessup Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Had a real good flying day Sunday 19th July. Started off with a flight in the Tecnam with my mate Doc from West Sale around Port Phillip Bay to show him how it is done and coming back via the heads. Day started about 7:30 am for me at the airport preparing and pre flighting the plane for the trip ahead, flight plan done the night before, weather printed out and W&B calculated we were on our way at 8:15 am lifting off in to the clear blue sky tracking for Tyabb leaving the frost on the ground behind. The flight down to overfly Tyabb and turn north to join the Melbourne coastal route north at Carrum was spectacular to say in the least with all the lush green paddocks in and around the Latrobe Valley and the clear blue skies and super smooth air we were flying in. Quick check of the area QNH from Moorabbin AWIS overhead Tyabb then the mandatory reporting call to Melbourne Radar at Carrum was made then the eyes and ears were open flicking between Melb radar and Moorabbin frequencies to see what else was jollying around at this usually busy section of airspace this time of the morning, best part was we were the only ones up at that hour on this fine Sunday morning much to my pleasure. Doc was busy snapping away on his phone & camera taking countless photos of the beautiful bay suburbs and city as you fly this coastal route north while I kept a wary eye out for traffic and monitored my alt at 2500, no sooner we were in the coastal route north we were out of it making our way to Bacchus Marsh and a T&G there before departing to overfly Lethbridge then make our way down to the coast via Torquay/Barwon Heads and across the heads making our way back to Tyabb for a cuppa. Turning final for 35 at Tyabb still amazes me when I look down at this so thin looking strip of runway compared to ours at YWSL but a beautiful landing was done and we made our way over to the Foxbat hangar trying to catch up with Mike Rudd. A good 1 1/2 to 2 hrs was spent at Tyabb and I finally had the pleasure of meeting Vev from the forums in person which was fantastic, departure from Tyabb was straight forward and the 82nm flight back home was just plain magic and short with a 10kt tailwind found at 3500 ending a pretty good day so far. A quick trip in to town for a feed because we were starving and some more fuel to check the burn rate off my figures was done and we were back at the airport ready to go Foxbat flying in Doc's plane, while Doc prepped his plane and I refuelled mine finding out the overall fuel used was within 1 litre of what OZ runways had calculated and what the fuel flow meter said was used and what I had mentally calculated. Foxy was soon ready and we were off heading for all places Tyabb as Doc wanted to go back there in his plane, we didn't quite make it as doing the calc's would leave us not being able to get back to home base before end of light as we now had a reasonable headwind so we jollied instead our way down in the general direction enjoying the views before turning back at Darnum and heading back home to end a spectacular days flying for both of us, overall we did 3.4 hrs (air switch) in mine and 1.4 (tach) in the Foxbat which wasn't a bad effort for a couple of hacks After getting home at 5pm I then endured a 1 hr drive each way to my brothers house at Tanjil South to celebrated his sons 3rd birthday, needless to say I was looking forward to my bed when I arrived home at 10:30 pm to end my day Just a couple of photos of the trip but nothing spectacular like around the city Cheers Alf 5
djpacro Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Mandatory call to Melbourne Centre at Carrum? Even going coastal outside the zone, MB Tower likes you to talk to them and stay on frequency while transiting nearby.
alf jessup Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 DJ, Supposed to call on Melbourne Radar frequency 135.7 at Carrum for reporting transiting north so that to me sounds mandatory, only following the CASA Melbourne Basin VPG, yes they like you to also monitor Moorabbin 123.0 (west) up to Ricketts point from Carrum but makes no mention of you having to talk to them while transiting outside MB airspace. You locals may no more than a country lad down that way but I only go on what the VPG says Alf
djpacro Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 The call on Centre is not mandatory. Interesting that the VPG (reading 2010 version) has southbound transits to Carrum at the same height as inbound traffic to MB at that point. And northbound - guess what the southbound departures will be at, but at least they will change to Centre frequency sometime after leaving the zone. As I said, I'd talk to MB as they know what's going on there and take an interest. The Tower folk are friendly and helpful. I'll see if I can get some current unofficial opinion from MB Tower and also Melb Centre to pass on. It is a very busy part of the world with most traffic on Tower frequency inbound or changing to Centre outbound. Both should see you on radar and Tower in particular may alert arrivals and departures if if etc. Writing this in a 787 halfway across the Pacific on my way to Oshkosh.

You lucky B:tard, enjoy Oshkosh I'm heading off to work tomorrow for 3 weeks
Blenners06 Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 My last flight was from Boonah to the Gold Coast a few weeks ago. Being a FIFO worker means that I have to go for a few weeks between flights. I'm same a Dazza, FIFO so my last lesson was 3 weeks ago. I'm aching to get up again. I just sit at work in the quite hours studying my BAK book (Bob Tate). 1
Ada Elle Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Strangely enough, I don't often see any mention of Alpi's in Oz - did they not take off there?!!!! They are a terrific x-country machine and can handle short grass strips too - not many aircraft have both capabilities. I did some training in a Pioneer 200 - really liked it. Too bad the aero club no longer cross-hires it.
Kaywoman68 Posted July 26, 2015 Posted July 26, 2015 I like to think it's better later than never. I got to go flying last Sunday . I didn't sleep very well the night before - I reckon it was the thought of going flying again, and the chance to see snow so close to home that kept walking me up! (I even forgot to have breakfast ) The day didn't turn out as originally planned (can be difficult figuring out Mother Nature's mood). I still had an awesome time though - we did a local flight over Crookwell, Gunning, Lake George, Lake Bathurst......saw lots of snow, clouds, wind farms, gliders........ Some photos attached 6
cavalon48 Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 Went for a fly to Inverloch, Venus Bay and on the way back over wonthaggi, was just before xmas 2014 some office staff were at Venus bay enjoying the surf and collecting shellfish (pipies). Couple of runs up Venus bay beach and could count 5 rips. Did a couple of dives to take a closer look and some of the pipie collecters were not far from one of those rips. Unfortunately one of the swimmers got caught up in the rips and drowned. Low flying with the gyro is fantastic dogging the beach goers and the surf. Compiled a dash cam video and it rus for 18mins, did chop a lot but guess a lot of roller coaster turns would go if take off more, here it is; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQxI4Y6T710
Ada Elle Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 I did a nav from YWOL to YMRY via the inland route and then through NWX controlled airspace/R420 - good practice talking to controllers. Great views.
Kyle Communications Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 Flew from Caboolture to Maryborough to watch the model RC turbine aircraft and catch up with some friends. Danny Leach and Roger Western flew with me in Danny's Savannah . Was smooth as silk on the way up not a cloud in the sky but a bit of smoke and fog. The way back was a bit lumpier but again no clouds but lots more smoke from fires. It was a great day. Photos courtesy of Danny off FB 1
diesel Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 Told my friend to be here before sunrise as we were flying to a meeting at the bottom of the south island NZ. As he has over an hours drive I felt that I had plenty of time to get the Jodel out and fired up. Well a server frost said otherwise. As soon as the Jodel was pulled out it became a sheet of ice. Pulled the prop through and tried an engine start. Well no way. Half an hour with a heat gun over the pots and she just made it. The sun was just starting to shine and Tom arrived. More time to deice and off into the still morning air from the 1000 ft grass runway. The start of a great day. Chas 2
K-man Posted August 2, 2015 Posted August 2, 2015 Today, lunch at Wings and Fins at Tooradin. Always a great excuse to go for a quick fly even though it's only 15 minutes from home. Boy, were they busy. Normally we visit during the week so it was interesting to see how many people visit at the weekend. I can highly recommend the seafood chowder. 1

There part of that new channel 9 show hot plate, was a heap of film crew there a few weeks back.
K-man Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 There part of that new channel 9 show hot plate, was a heap of film crew there a few weeks back. Yes. We didn't know anything about that before we arrived and saw the show poster on the wall. I wasn't going to watch 'Hot Plate', having watched so many other cooking shows recently, but I went home and watched on "9jumpin". It will be interesting to see how they go. Nols just might have to get used to the idea of spicing up her food a bit.
Capn Wannabe Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 Did my first session of spin training earlier today....first flight in 5 months. Haven't had so much fun in an aircraft in ages! 2
2tonne Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 Yesterday afternoon I had a couple of circuits in 7600 at Redcliffe. Then Mahl stepped out and I went out for a fly by myself up around Bribie, practising a few turns trimmed at different speeds. It was smooth air and really enjoyed it. Returned to Redcliffe in time to see the de Havilland Dove doing a few circuits. Can't think of a better way to spend a lazy Sunday arvo. 2 1

I heard someone announcing a first solo in 7600 on the Saturday. I was on the way back from Moreton Island (doing a bit of whale watching with my wife), and got to witness that persons first solo from the dead side!! Whoever it was, did well. Nice tight circuit and looked like a good landing from 1000' up.
hihosland Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 pvt strip Koo Wee Rup to pvt strip McLaughlans beach 70 nautical miles 43 mins journey out and 133 mins on the return journey It is not very often I regret having a 75knt machine First officer Coco the dog was not impressed with the prolonged and bumpy ride.
Robbo Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 Been wondering who owned that stip, they got themselves a gyro now?
