sfGnome Posted April 26, 2023 Posted April 26, 2023 I dunno. You’re sitting down all day Saturday and you’re going to be sitting down all day Monday, a bit of exercise sounds like a good idea. 😄 3 2
facthunter Posted April 26, 2023 Posted April 26, 2023 Ya gotta keep wiggling your legs if you can't move for a longish time. CLOTs. DVT. Nev 1

Garfly Posted April 27, 2023 Posted April 27, 2023 Looks like a great place for a flying visit. Especially given that the hosts are so welcoming 1 1

RFguy Posted April 29, 2023 Posted April 29, 2023 (edited) Wednesday, Thursday : Thruster88 and I flew my new Archer down from Charters Towers to Cowra, made it a two day event. Could be done in one but the LONG day would remove the fun. We have never seen any of central queensland, so this was a good chance to look around. Locals at airports very friendly. Overnighted at Cunnamulla. Nice full river running through it. Plenty of greenery around. 'soaring' techniques I learned during training with Rob Glenn in a hot summer years ago now - to see a thermal present by increased VSI , then pull the nose up slow and try and stay it in as long as possible. Required technique when trying to climb from 7500 to 9500 to take a look in the Archer. Turns a rather anemic 400 fpm into 800 fpm. I'll take that- it is the only thing is life truly free. and almost as good the big Jab LOL. I love NDBs. Such a great facility. Much more engaging than GNSS. and Thruster88 gets to practice his morse code. Edited April 29, 2023 by RFguy 6 1 2
Carbon Canary Posted April 29, 2023 Posted April 29, 2023 Got to love thermals although your pax may not ! Left Narromine on a 38C day heading to Bourke and got some amazing thermals a few years ago. The C172 was climbing at 1000fpm with the nose pointing down…..until you fell off the other side. My glider co-pilot was loving it ! Pax in the back seat was slowly turning green though. Nice pic of the Warrego R. - good to see it full. 3
kiwiaviator Posted April 29, 2023 Posted April 29, 2023 The ADF was also useful for listening to the current cricket or rugby game. Good to see you using the old tech. 2
Thruster88 Posted April 29, 2023 Posted April 29, 2023 After 8 hours straight and level flying in RFguy's excellent Archer I had to get in the thruster and wind back up with some manoeuvring around the low cloud during the Saturday rain. Always love checking the farm after rain. 8 1
Blueadventures Posted May 7, 2023 Posted May 7, 2023 Visited the beach strip this morning, nice autumn conditions and great flying friends. IMG_7015.mov IMG_7013.mov 8 1
Old Koreelah Posted May 8, 2023 Posted May 8, 2023 Good to see some people are actually committing aviation! 1
Blueadventures Posted May 21, 2023 Posted May 21, 2023 Nice fly to the beach for a cuppa then on to Proserpine airport for a BBQ lunch put on by the aero club. 2 hours all up. Good roll up both places. 9
RFguy Posted May 29, 2023 Posted May 29, 2023 (edited) Sunday- Cowra... slightly foggy morning, 0730 local, I could see mountains OK to the west, uncertain exactly what the ceiling was , could see a few fog patches, but easterly wind. Hoping I could get a few circuits at least 1000' AGL. sun out intermittently. (low on horizon) Took off, cool so good performance.. good climb rate 1200 fpm. at 400' I look down to check Ts and Ps in the green.yep. Look up again 2 seconds later 100% IMC.... woops ! wings level, maintain runway heading, nose down, reduce power, carb heat HOT , eye on altitude . Descend out of it. 300'. bleed speed, flaps 25, low level circuit , swing onto downwind in a gentle bank, fog getting worse... make early base turn swinging down land 1/3 way down the main A 4 minute flight. (might have been 3 minutes) my shortest flight ever. Wow, soo large clumps of cloud and fog drifting through . Have done this in the simulator a few times (take off into 500' IMC) so practiced skills clicked in. But any pilot should recover from that with those same actions I think. No problem at YCWR, but if this had occurred at an AD like Young surrounded by hills, or at an unfamiliar AD, that's a little more critical. So good to think about what you might do in the above real world worked example ! Edited May 29, 2023 by RFguy 6 2
facthunter Posted May 30, 2023 Posted May 30, 2023 Better still, don't get into it. Stirring it up can make it thicker and it can get colder just before sun up. Nev 1
Blueadventures Posted May 30, 2023 Posted May 30, 2023 (edited) Just back from a great 3 overnight trip of 8.8 hours in the nice autumn air with friends and meeting new flyers. Overnighted at the famous Aeroplane beach north of 1770. Then an 18 knot tail wind home for the 2.6 hour last leg. Ice on Nynja for first time in Queensland. Clear skies saw the Southern cross and the pointers. Also saw a sunrise and a sunset during flight. Even caught fish Dart, Bream and Whiting that were breakfast and dinner and some were taken home by Bill and John. Life was good these days. Edited May 30, 2023 by Blueadventures 8 8
