Marty_d Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Best month = February (maybe March will be ok too) Good places to visit, depends on what you're into - going clockwise from the top: the gorge at Launceston, cheese factory and heaps of wineries around the north east, Wineglass Bay is spectacular, Port Arthur, Salamanca market at Hobart, even further south you have Hastings Caves / Tahune Airwalk, Southport Lagoon, Dover (used to be an airstrip behind the Dover Hotel - not sure if it's still there), Cradle Mountain and the lakes in the middle, west coast (Strahan/Queenstown) is great if you're there on one of the 3 days it doesn't rain, the Tarkine forests of the north west. This is not a comprehensive list by any means, just a few ideas. There are vineyards all over the place, good B&B's all over, others would have more idea about small airstrips and hangaring. Can't go past Bonorong wildlife sanctuary for local Tasmanian wildlife, Bruny Island Cruises are great for spectacular coastal scenery / seals / dolphins etc (not for the seasick!) If you're into bushwalking check out www.parks.tas.gov.au . Great scenery is everywhere, there's also plenty of tiger country if you're flying around the south/ southwest / west parts of the state though. (Not that you'll see any real Tasmanian tigers though, despite what the occasional nutjob says, they are extinct...) 2 1
Russ Posted March 3, 2014 Author Posted March 3, 2014 Thanks Marty, appreciated...... Feb...March, missed for this yr..... 2015 then. We have a son based Adelaide, intending to visit him, then swing on by Tazy. From up here NQ, to down there, and return, will be a fair hike, looking forward to it. Again....thanks.
pmccarthy Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Also consider via King Island and maybe a night or two on Three Hummock Island, very hospitable accommodation, then on to Wynyard and parts beyond.
Russ Posted March 3, 2014 Author Posted March 3, 2014 Was considering doing the loop thing, one way via flinders etc, other way via king island etc. looking at charts, the king island route might be an ask, ( the glide to land reg ) ....flinders way seems no probs. appreciate the flow of info here.
