About to get talked into getting rid of our landline with internet plus ??

This day and age we all have our trusty smart phones, and iPads are common place.

My iPad has a prepaid card $180 yr.......giving me next to unlimited data, throw in Skype and all is great. iPhone x 2 with $600 plus call allowance per month costs me $100 mth.

So.....

iPad plus 2 mobiles per yr works out at $1380.00.

And, Disconnecting landline saves me $1980.00 yr. ( lass at Telstra tells me folks are doing exactly as above.........big time )

What provider do you use Russ for your phone and ipad data? I use telstra because it works, would like to hear what others are doing.

I pay about $152 per year for my landline, That includes local calls. Our internet provider costs $480 p.a. and for about $20 p.a. it provides trunk calls. We have one mobile phone for about $60 p.a. which we hardly use. So all up using a landline costs us about $712. That is reduced because I am a pensioner, but nowhere near what Russ pays. I can't afford to do without the landline, especially as I don't always get mobile reception at home.

The Telco's want us all to go mobile because they can hike up the charges as there are less controls over them then.

I use an iPad and an iPhone and have no landline. I tether the iPad to my laptop when needed. Telstra is my provider as the best of poor choices locally.

I live in an area of extremely poor coverage only a couple of miles from the Telstra tower to the north but shielded by the timber corridor beside the east-west river in between. I had to buy an aerial to enhance wifi reception but I'm damned if I will give Telstra any more money to go landline and ADSL.

If I drive a kilometre towards or away from the tower, I get full five bars strength. Frustrating and of course Telstra isn't interested.

I still use a Landline and ADSL because of the amount of Data I use a month (200GB). I need the low pings also for online gaming that ADSL offers so I am stuck with some sort of fixed line for the time being.

Telstra. ....

utilizing the iPad with Skype is easy as , and skype per call is bugger all.

Lock your ph into 24mths plan, all is good. Or, set your ph to min monthly plan, then install skype into ph.....off you go.

Minimum monthly plans get phased out and replaced by the more expensive ones.

I was moments away from signing up with Southern Phone when Telstra convinced my wife (while simultaneously visiting our regional Teltra shop) to sign up for a two-year plan with them. We were given the impression that it included our mobiles. Not so. We ended up paying mobs more than Southern would have cost. It is in the interests of the Telcos to keep us confused.

We have a small business, landline with unlimited free calls to land and mobile (inc free diversions to mobile usually around 300 calls p/mth plus ADSL2 with 500gb with Telstra $130 p/mth. My mobile Telstra Boost $40 p/mth 2gb data and unlimited calls . Wife and teenage daughter on ALDI (reduced Telstra services) $35 p/mth each 1.5gb data and unlimited calls.

24 months ago I was paying around $600 p/mth business Landline and calls, $90 p/mth ADSL2 and $100 p/mth ea wife and I mobiles. So now $240 p/mth compared to $890 p/mth and my teenage daughter has a mobile and can't give me any nasty surprises like the previous 3 kids.

I like a landline as a further backup in bad weather fires etc - living in the hills mobile reception is bad any way so I'll stick to all forms :)

Ah wireless technology is soooooooooo wonderful…so the liberals tell us. Thats their solution for the NBN radio is like a pipe…and you can only fit so much water down that pipe. You get charged a heap for wireless in their data rates..they love wireless they make a fortune out of it. How does the govt make a fortune you ask its done by telstra and optus and vodaphone etc…well ask them how much they pay the govt (ACMA) for access to that radio spectrum each year…billions of dollars is what they pay..and the more spectrum they take up adding wireless channels the more money the govt makes

And if your paying for data anyway then Whatsapp and others like it coming out soon will save you a bunch. Skype is the bomb for OS calls. Whatsapp looks set to revolutionize the mobile platform to possibly data only.... If your thinking about signing up to anything longer then 12 months from now, look into the way mobile is about to turn data only for many.

That package gives 12Gb per year data... I use more that that a day...Lyle

Stop downloading porn videos and you wont...

Realistically though most mobile pages are far lighter so the ipads do tend to save on data ...somewhat

We use ADSL about 180gb per month... family of 4 so we will stay "on the line" for a while

We use 8Gb a month, family of four, but this month it ran out a week early. Shaping is a lot harsher than it used to be, I think they have a special rate of refusal on email and anything video under shaping. Telstra love to try and get you to upgrade, I would love to be able to upgrade to Dodo unlimited ADSL for the same price I am currently paying for my 8Gb but there is no incentive for Telstra to upgrade our exchanges to allow that to happen. Wireless is where dial-up bigpond got to about 15 years ago, there are so many people sharing the available bandwidth that about one page in ten won't load because of time-outs any time people are awake, improves after about 10.00 pm. must be time to go satellite again.

We have 100 gig per month at home. I have 1 gig on my iphone and 4 gig on my lap top (4g) that i use when i am at work out in the bush. I struggle when at work with only 4 gig on my Lap top per month and working a 2 weeks on 2 weeks off roster, only need the 4g for two weeks a month.

All these big numbers!!! We are about 16Km from our phone exchange, so no ADSL. Our valley has no 3G (or any other G for that matter) coverage by any provider, so no wireless or mobile. Telstra landline is our ONLY emergency phone, and when that went down at the height of the recent bushfire here, Telstra's "emergency repair" timeline was within 7 days. They actually took 3 days. We have NBN interim satellite so-called broadband - slow and limited download. But would we move back to the city to get better communications? NO WAY!! It's not that many years ago that all this connectivity was science fiction stuff, but it is taken for granted now. Do we really need it?

Oops... couldn't make the picture any smaller. Still, when you've got something this modern, you may as well show it off...

Dazza I wouldn't think you would be getting 4G speeds out there at the mine site...it would only be 3G on 900 MHz the 2100 stuff hasn't migrated out into the bush yet its still really only in the city. Your moden can do 4G for sure but if the cell sites are only 3 G that's what you get it can roll back

We have ADSL1 only & are waiting on the so called NBN to turn up. Even so speed is not too bad & costs $29.95 a month for 40 GB although we rarely use more than 20 GB. The phone is another $29.95 with $2.00 capped price calls nationally. There is no contract. This is with iiNet & when you have an issue you get an Australian. They are based in WA (part of Westnet) & support is excellent.

Mobile is with Amaysim & costs about $10.00 a month on average. My wife refuses to own a mobile. All calls are 12c a minute & 6c a minute to NZ, UK, USA etc. Go figure. There is no flagfall, no contract & they charge my credit card in arrears every couple of months as they roll the account over if the spend is less than $10.00. I rarely use mobile data as it is too slow & costs 5c a MB without any plan. The whole lot costs about a grand a year.

I got the very latest in telephones and it's amazing, you can press numbers on the pad and you actually get to speak to another person!

My internet is $200 per year, fast and unlimited in every respect.

Well, I don't know about anybody else, but despite woeful coverage, first order of today was to check the weather and plan around it.

Then today I was able to use this science fiction and quickly take advantage of the troubles in the Ukraine and sell the last $15K of wheat I had left to sell for a bit more money. Yep...believe it or not, the Ukraine is a big wheat exporter and a major competitor to Aussie wheat...hence a big spike in wheat prices over the past couple days. Prices were checked, decisions made, contracts signed and wheat sold...quickly, and all on line.

Then got a call from my livestock agent and I happened to be feeding the cattle he wanted to talk about. So I was standing next to the cattle and was able to tell him about them.

Of course today on my smart phone I was also checking the availability of a tractor tyre that got a steel spike though it yesterday (I'm not making this up ah_oh.gif.cb6948bbe4a506008010cb63d6bb3c47.gif )

We have crap Internet and mobile coverage, and we will be the last in Australia to get decent coverage (if ever) but despite that it is a vital part of today's farming business. It's also good for checking METARs, TAFs and NOTAMs 003_cheezy_grin.gif.c5a94fc2937f61b556d8146a1bc97ef8.gif
