Hi I own a 582 rotax on an airborne trike and wondering what changes and what is involved in taking the silencer off to get better fuel consumption. Thanks.

They are part of the engine tuning as supplied. You may lose power and economy if you change it. Nev

As Nev said, DONT, 2 Strokes exhaust systems are a critical part of the tuning design, alter them at your peril. If you need to change the configuration talk to Floods.

Yes the pipes on a 582 are tuned too your craft I would not play around with it unless u understand the the internals working of a two stroke engine.

Never heard of removing a tuned exhaust to get better fuel consumption, 2-strokes by nature are thirsty. I did fit an basic untuned exhaust system to a Robin 440 2-stroke once, to prove there was actually something wrong with the tuned exhaust a mate made for it (long story but the pipe plan dimensions were incorrectly translated)

It was LOUD, UGLY and tellingly, p*ss poor fuel consumption but it did run consistantly, the tuned exhaust actually restricted power and eventually melted a piston.

Is everything properly tuned.. ignition timed correctly, air filters clean/new, plugs good colour, jet sizes correct?

I'd start on that side of the engine :)

Cheers

Do you mean the bug strainer?

No he means the plastic silencer box between the carbies and the air filters. Designed to muffle induction noise.

Yes that's right, I've seen the blue tops with just two pod filters on the carbs.

The manual for my Aircreation trike says different jets in the carbs if removing the silencer.

But doesn't specify what jets to use.
