Marty_d Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 Someone posted me this link and asked if I could knock one of these up in my shed after I finish the 701. Bit beyond my capabilities... http://finance.ninemsn.com.au/executivesuite/motoring/411775/honda-is-making-a-luxury-jet-with-really-odd-engines.slideshow Love the engine position, guess the Russians have done this a bit too but usually forward of the leading edge. Can anyone tell me the advantage of mounting them above the wing as opposed to the normal position off the side of the fuselage? Guessing there's not as much load cantilevered out. 1
turboplanner Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 Here's your answer - reduces drag: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_HA-420_HondaJet
Marty_d Posted May 23, 2014 Author Posted May 23, 2014 Thanks Turbo - interesting that the max speed and cruise speed are the same at 420 knots...
facthunter Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 No mention of a Mach limit. (There has to be one) 420 knots is good.. The wing is aluminium. Much easier to mount an engine to that , than a carbon fuselage. and you don't run fuel and deicing ducts through the fuselage Nev 1 1
rankamateur Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 Those high engines would be a lot more convenient in a water ditching. 2
djpacro Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 Mmo is apparently 0.72. Some Australian engineers involved (in a small way) with the design of it. Sorry, unable to provide links as I am on an iPad.
facthunter Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 Thank you. MMO .72 is not high. Rank, you might be able to taxi it after ditching Nev 1
PA. Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 Those high engines would be a lot more convenient in a water ditching. Wonder what the planing speed would be?
SDQDI Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 Wonder what the planing speed would be? I was looking at the fuse profile it looks like it would be ok unless you got the pointy bit in first then things might get exciting.
Marty_d Posted May 26, 2014 Author Posted May 26, 2014 Wonder what the planing speed would be? That low wing might create a bit of drag in the water... might be better off with this:

Mounting on the wings reduces the spar bending moments reducing the required structural mass. The wind is milled from aluminium and is very cool looking. They had a cut away version at oshkosh 2013.
red750 Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 If you think that's an odd engine setup, what about the Martin XB-51 tri-jet:
Marty_d Posted May 26, 2014 Author Posted May 26, 2014 What a waste Red750 - you could have used that for "Guess the plane"... 1
