Hell, they ( Chinese, Indonesia,Korea ) to name a few, are quietly buying up / leasing huge tracks of land here, NT in particular, many stations now Asian owned / leased.

Been hearing this for the last 50 years, there must be some pretty slick salesmen out there, the whole of Oz must have been sold 3 times over by now.

A lot of land has been bought up - Glen Waverley in Melbourne could probably now be described as a Chine suburb.

In agriculture what Russ is saying sounds about right to me - I know of quite a large area of grazing land bought by Chinese in the Keith/Bordertown, SA, district, and there has been speculation (by Australians) that they are replacing family owned properties which suffer from the cost pressures of buying Landcruisers, Ski boats, Aircraft and overseas travel, however there's no real evidence of any strategy - just people who have made obscene amounts of money in China, but don't want to invest it there.

As far as slick salesmen go, yes some are being caught (see link) This Chines sucker paid around $5 million for land in Melbourne where residential and industrial development and many other uses are prohibited. It's out in the middle of a swamp which floods about 2.4 metres deep, and downstream from a sewerage plant which has been designated as a Hazardous area due to the potential for a major chlorine gas leak which could take out a sizeable number of people in a theme park.......which is why it has the zoning and overlay it has.

Its drawn the attention of the politicians, and the seller has started to backpedal already, but it looks as if the buyer may have good grounds to get his money back.

Does anyone have a link to a site with actual info such as landing fees? The ERSA entry is not promising (want lots of ASICS over there!) for me doing a circuit there in my Foxbat, but nothing seems to say I can't, except people have mentioned it will be expensive and I have checked their website but can't find any actual info.

You're so clever FT working that out, but I'd have to say Toowoomba wouldn't rate it as a top hideaway with all you rednecks around.

I called the number on their site and it goes to some company, who gave me another number, being that of their only landline. Which went to an answering machine.

The 50 years of land sales quip was in reference to all the panic over the years when the "Japs", "Yanks", "Koreans", "Turks", etc, have all had their turn as being paranoidly reported as "Buying everything up".

Chinese have been immigrating all over the World throughout history, not exactly news. When I was working in Springvale in 1980 I used to fondly call it "Springapore".

And the phone number needed is 4613 1133
