jamesaj183 Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 When testing the spark plugs with a spark plug tester I cant get the engine to spin fast enough to create a spark unless I take 1 spark plug out of each cylinder. Brand new starter and battery. Gap is set correctly to magnetos, new spark plugs ,new mags. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. New starter also
frank marriott Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 Is the earth lead connected to the armature end of the starter? There is a SB about this, you can so sometimes get a high R through the case if using engine as ground. 1
jamesaj183 Posted June 10, 2014 Author Posted June 10, 2014 No their is only a positive lead to the starter. Are you saying I should hook a earth to the starter itself ? Looking for the SB now.
frank marriott Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 Yes, direct earth from armature end of starter to battery. If you look on the Jabiru site there is a service bulletin explaining the earthing in detail, and picture.
jamesaj183 Posted June 10, 2014 Author Posted June 10, 2014 I'm hoping this does the trick once I complete the update I will post the results.
deadstick Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 Also you must ensure that the magnetos are installed in the correct direction.
deadstick Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 Overhaul manual:- http://www.jabiru.net.au/Manuals/Engine/JEM0001-4_Overhaul_Manual.pdf 7.5.1 Ignition Coils Ignition coils are fitted with insulating washers between the coil and the mounting post. These are essential as they greatly reduce the operating temperature of the coil, improving its longevity. Ignition coils must be fitted with the output lead pointing in the direction of propeller rotation. Coils installed backwards may fire with the wrong timing or not work at all.

Inexpensive, easy to fit and it fires one set of plugs at very low revs while the starter is operating. 1 3
Keenaviator Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 Jabiru sell a very good cold start kit. Inexpensive, easy to fit and it fires one set of plugs at very low revs while the starter is operating. It works brilliantly, even with an early type starter which is much less powerful. Laurie 1
jamesaj183 Posted June 10, 2014 Author Posted June 10, 2014 Wow! Something as small as moving the earth wire to the rear post of the starter did the trick. Thank you all for your input.
jamesaj183 Posted June 11, 2014 Author Posted June 11, 2014 No, through bolts will be done before seeing any air time. The plane has been sitting for a few years. 1
jamesaj183 Posted June 12, 2014 Author Posted June 12, 2014 Luckily my serial number of engine is not affected by the SB.
Guest Andys@coffs Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 James Jabiru barrels are steel and very subject to corrosion. If you read the engine manuals they need to be oil inhibited if expected to be unused even for a relatively short time. Do you know if the engine was inhibited for the few years and if so was it turned over by hand every week or so as the manual calls for? Check leak downs carefully if not sure before venturing upward. Andy
