A PILOT has died after a light aircraft crashed in Burrumbuttock this evening.

 

It is believed the aircraft struck powerlines about 5.40pm before coming down in a paddock about 100 metres from the Farmer’s Inn hotel.

 

A police media spokeswoman confirmed the pilot died.

 

Witnesses described hearing several “loud bangs” before the plane came to rest in the paddock.

 

The town’s power supply has been cut following the crash.

Terrible, I heard a bit of it as I was leaving the house, but the news report finished before I got the whole story. Condolences to the pilots family.

ATSB final report.

 

Just reading the earlier links, a few people may have asked themselves, "If this can happen to someone so experienced, what hope have I got"

 

Well the minimum legal height we can fly at is 500 feet above GROUND level (not as some culprit claimed after another crash, 500 feet on the altimeter)

 

Except for some mountain valleys, you won't find power lines above 500 feet.

 

Not only was this crash a complete waste of life, but there had been a very public warning in the local area a few years before when a guy, on his wedding day decided to follow the bridal car to the church in his helicopter - at road level of course as the highly skilled do, and killed himself on a power line which crossed the road.

Edit: I flew powerline survey about ten years ago and even though you are flying low, fast and in very close proximity to power lines they can still sneak up on you.

 

We had a map showing all the powerlines but those dirty great big high voltage lines with the "Skeleton" mast structures are a pain in the butt because they go over the lines you have to fly and if your not concentrating you will hit them.

 

But........ We were highly trained and had dedicated charts of where the lines were, we had to satify the power company and had to complete there training !!

 

DO NOT FLY A MANOEUVRE IF YOU ARE NOT TRAINED AS IT WILL MOST LIKELY BE THE LAST TIME YOU WILL FLY AND YOU WILL BE PUTTING THE FINAL NAIL IN YOUR OWN COFFIN
