Rotax 503 overhaul

kiterjosh

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I'm looking at buying a drifter but the 503 is well and truly out of hours about 400hrs and over 5 years

Just wondering if anybody has a rough cost of overhauling one of these engines. Or where I could locate a second hand one with hours left on it.

Any help will be appreciated

Thanks

Josh

I was able to find all the parts I needed on ebay , con rod kit as well.JimG

Are they genuine parts , or Chinese ?

I'm doing up a still chainsaw , but the parts on eBay are mostly non genuine .

Most are genuine, it takes a bit of digging. I found the model of snow mobile and/or jet ski that has the exact same motor. Then start hunting down the different parts places that stock them. Mostly Canada, i once found a shop that did exchange cranks. I believe it is still out there , you just have to be tenacious in the search.

Cheers

What size Stihl saw are you doing up Mike ? The MS170 is made in China but the bigger Stihl saws are still made in Germany.

Nice, I have a 67 cc Husqvarna saw that I bought in 1994. Still goes well.

I'm gona try one of those Chinese ones for about $250

Is there any such thing as a chainsaw forum ?

Actually , I don't really want to know!

I just bought a Echo 310 ES for pruning as my Husky is way and heavy and big for pruning. They are a professional saw.Warranty is 2 years professional use and 5 years domestic use. They are normally $529 but I bought mine for $299 . Echo have a Australian wide discount deal on ATM but I think it ends on the 31st of this month. They are Japanese made and have a excellent reputation. 30.5 cc and it weighs 4 kg. All the Echo saws are on special ATM maybe worth a look.

I need one that's about the size of a farm boss . A guy in town has one of these Chinese monsters , recons it's all right

Q . How's a chainsaw a safety item in aviation

A. That's one less tree to hit !

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm sending my 503 to bert flood for complete overhaul! New crank etc..

About $4000

Seeking genuine parts especially on ebay has become near impossible!! Every thing from china now in made from paper mashae and held together with bits of spaghetti ( they call them bolts)!

Not worth that to rebuild for an xtra $1200 you can buy abrand new 582.

I wish ! 582 with air filters from bert flood is $6650 including gst( $6820 delivered)

Trust me my new lightwing 582 should arrive here tomorrow

If I could afford an extra $2500 I would go that way as the 582 with radiator and coolant weighs .4 of a kilo less .how ever the 15 extra hp would require firewall mods on my nieuport - apparently?

The number of times I have seen a conglomerate of parts collected up and an engine is assembled.

Quite often that conglomerate will shower parts. You could save $2 gran.

I know $2gran is a bother to find, however it is some peace of mind that the parts are having the best chance of staying together.

I hear ya but unfortunately/apparently the nieuport would require significant modifications to accommodate the extra ponies up front? I too have had this same concern and have spent 2 months in finding an alternative but there's just nothing that will go in there without modifification, after much much debate about low hr s/h or rebuild I decided to have my engine ( 414 hrs) overhauled , having a very clear history of the plane and engine I believe this to be the right decision ? Wal @ bert floods assures me it will be "as good as new" ....?

Note modification refers to firewall forward.and/or wing lengthen.
