New paint scheme ideas

Ultralights

Recommended Posts

while im at home with the flu, i got the pencils out, and tried to come up with a unique paint design for the Savannah, it currently undergoing a 1000hrly overhaul, and with lots of spots of surface corrosion removed, its now covered in spots of primer and requires a complete repaint..

here is whats floating around in my mind at the moment, sadly im not very creative..

\

this is the current design, but recoloured,

again, same design, but colour changed.

camouflage colours?

got the idea after reading about the polka dot warriors of WWII, definitely Hi visibility.

idea came from seeing a Yak painted in similar scheme

memories of Ansett and Compass airlines.

any other ideas or suggestions? feel free to use the top ones and photoshop something..

I like the top one too, BUT the line between the red and the black on the rear fuselage needs to angle back harder so the black is not so wide (heavy) on the fin and rudder. The way it is at the moment it looks like it will tip up on the skid, otherwise it is quite stunning.

I vote for a repaint of the original colour scheme 107_score_010.gif.2fa64cd6c3a0f3d769ce8a3c21d3ff90.gif

You mean a bit like the one in my avitar:tongue in cheek:?

1000 hrs up already! She's certainly no hanger queen.

Both red and black are pretty heat absorbing colours if left parked in the sun as stunning as they look.

Pic 3 looks nice and less tail-heavy.

Decisions, decisions, decisions!.

Is that a 5 blade prop? Any info about it?

Does it really matter, What about "two blades for performance, three blades for looks", that one has three blades more than it needs. I got an AP430 three blade, but I gave serious consideration to the AP420 two blade version. I only lost my nerve because I have never seen another Savannah with a two blade prop.

But is it more efficient than a three blade? I know it looks more savage but looks can be deceiving. Would have to be fairly savage to look better than Rob's new paint scheme.

Don't know about the efficiency....they seem to work ok on the Dash 8 Q 400 s......I was lookin at importing one when the dollar was right for the Lightwing. Currently run a Powerfin 3 blade which is very efficient.....

Last time I looked a Dash 8 has more than 100hp engines, My understanding was that you need only as many blades as it takes to deliver the available horsepower, any more than that builds in in efficiency by drag, The other consideration would be if the design only allowed for a small prop diameter, such as on a pusher, then you would cop the loss of efficiency to swing a smaller diameter prop.

an AP332 Airmaster prop is rated 40Hp per blade so you need a 3 blade on a 912ULS, AP420 and 430 are rated at 60 Hp per blade so a two blade4 prop would work for upto a 914 Rotax.

I have never seen any Savannah with less than three blades in Australia, Canada, New Zealand or the United States. But, in Europe there seem to be quite a few around:

And they probably all have J2200 motors in them too(although a lot have composite props), funny bunch the Europeans! Notice the funny little intakes on most of the cowlings.

you must admit, a 5 blader would look cool, and whats a little extra drag, what with Tundra tyres and all already fitted. smoking.gif.2d8aabfab26579c9810e4f07a330ce61.gif

And the extra paint 004_oh_yeah.gif.82b3078adb230b2d9519fd79c5873d7f.gif.

Perhaps the go-faster stripes will compensate for the five blade prop, tundra tyres, etc? 039_private_eyes.gif.ee730e198261239d6248af84b953d95f.gif

theres not that much extra paint.... the recolured parts are back to bare metal, corrosion removed, retreated with Alodine.. then. resprayed. part of the reason its taking a lot longer than originally planned. then again, a lot of Savannah have 4 fuel tanks, i only have 3, so even with a bit of extra paint, the weight will still be close to, or still under those with 4 tanks fitted.. i hope 003_cheezy_grin.gif.c5a94fc2937f61b556d8146a1bc97ef8.gif
