Marty_d
Here you go. 225 lb of thrust for takeoff, and all-up weight of 19kg. And if you want a great example of it in use, look up the "SubSonex jsx-2"... http://www.pbsvb.com/tj-100-turbojet-engine

This neutralises the weight advantage somewhat.
SDQDI
Instead of an alternate why not think of it as a possible hybrid.......... I could change from STOL to VTOL and it could also be a limp home function so if you have a primary engine failure it pops up and gives you ten or fifteen minutes. It would be fun on a single seat setup just for the novelty of it

As SDQDI says though it'd be a lot of fun with a single seater. ... it pops up and gives you ten or fifteen minutes. On the engine site they show it set up on top of a Blanik. Engineering a "pop up" cradle that would handle the thrust may be heavy, but then again you don't have to worry about folding props. I'm thinking a jet-powered glider would get some attention at the local club! 1
flyvulcan
It's already been done out at Waikerie. There is a glider with 3 x 40lbf Jet Cat jet engines fitted. It has been flying successfully for a couple of years now. Very cool!
